I suppose the old "would you kindly" and the KOTOR 2 explanation of why you get more powerful after killing people, but these are a bit nudge nudge winky winky "hey, videogames", what are the smooth examples of gameplay and narrative fitting together in an interesting way?

In assassin's creed 3, Connor comes from a culture that believes that it is deeply wrong to kill an animal and then not use its body

The ending of Kentucky route zero act 3 is an excellent example but it's spoilers as hell
the protagonist is a recovering alcoholic

Lem Doolittle, the closest thing to a villain that the game has had so far, offers him a job at his whiskey distillery, and offers him a glass of the whiskey they make

As you try to move the mouse cursor, it slowly drags itself onto the whiskey, and won't move until you click on it

I didn't dick around on the highway because the map just felt really weird to me.

But I did explore around the other areas and didn't just beeline towards exists. Took me like 45 minutes for act 1?

At the very least, if you find directions to some place off the critical path you should check it out

For instance in act 1 you can get directions to the shop that Shannon works at and it's a terrific scene

Not worth restarting act 1 over but something to keep in mind for the future

For the PS3 there is an HD collection of it and ICO. ICO is a little rougher around the edges, imo, but is also considered a classic.

I was actually trying to find the shop but I got lost. I really can't follow the directions they give me in that game to save my life. I hate driving directions.

Or maybe it was just snares and they would eventually just free themselves or be killed by someone else.

    Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Samus is corrupted by Phazon early on and fitted with a device that lets her channel Phazon into her body to essentially gain superpowers. Doing so makes you WAY more powerful and is initially perfectly safe to do (though you have to pay in health to use it). Then as you progress through the game and encounter sources of Phazon (in scripted events, not just randomly), you lose the ability to have the health you didn't shoot at the enemy refunded. Then you get a time limit on it. Then if you don't exhaust all your Phazon within the time limit (which is shorter), you die. Then you can be forcefully put into Hypermode by certain enemy attacks. Then at the end of the game you're permanently stuck in Hypermode and have to hurry and constantly be shooting and finding ways of exhausting Phazon to avoid death.

Every step of this process makes you more powerful, but also makes the power more dangerous to use. It's the best gameplay representation of having a corrupting power I've seen in a game.

Also in Metal Gear Solid 3 after Snake loses his right eye going in first-person view will give you a more limited field of vision (basically the right edge of the screen is completely dark, and it's fuzzier around a ring with perfect focus centered somewhere on the left side of the screen).

metal gear also does a lot of lampshading on the dissonance

Does the 3DS version of MGS3 go from 3D to 2D when Snake loses his eye?

Because that would be the one really cool thing about that version if that's the case.

    I'm playing Flower again because I just remembered there's a PS4 version

I kinda love that Vinny Caravella, the most upbeat positive guy in the world, the only games he outright hates are the super innocuous peaceful ones

You would not think that would be the kind of guy that hates Flower and Animal Crossing, but boy oh boy does he hate them

Hey what about the end of fuckin' Brothers?
The vignette where you cross the river right near the end is an amazing moment where the gameplay conceits fold back into the narrative and ALSO deliver the biggest moment of emotional impact in the entire game.

I read about this yesterday. I...don't know what to think or feel or how to respond. I think Temkin's response was about as good as a response gets in that situation, but...gah. It almost doesn't mean anything. None of this means much of anything because neither side can prove anything so the only assured result of the situation is that internet assholes will harass the accuser if they can determine who it is.

I *really* enjoy Temkin's tumblr feed. I think it's smart and sometimes genuinely inspiring. I don't think he seems like the kind of person that would do this, but that's sort of part of the underlying problem. The number of people that "don't look like rapists" is bigger than the number of people that "have not raped someone". It wouldn't be as-massive a societal ill if it was only truly deviant people that sexually assaulted women. People we admire, socialize with, and like in a general sense do these things too.

It would be really nice if our culture didn't implicitly discourage women from reporting this shit immediately.
