[chat] de la Folia

Irond WillIrond Will WARNING: NO HURTFUL COMMENTS, PLEASE!!!!!Cambridge. MAModerator Mod Emeritus
this is a poast about la folia (or la follia)

turns out that the famous main theme from last of the mohicans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pCv7k_Hzvg

is a variation on la folia de espagna, which i guess has been central to compositions for centuries

here, listen to corelli's incorporation of the theme in a violin concerto:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MY_qrqK-rgc

(stick around until at least 3:30-4:00 or so where it just blows up, but really i recommend listening on - the whole progression is just breathtaking)

gemiani and vivaldi also use the theme in their stuff

here's a dutch website (in english) that talks about the folia:

http://www.folias.nl/

so this is my poast about la follia

I dunno if Godel applies to computer languages. Because his incompleteness theorem (if that's what you meant) only applies to sufficiently complex systems such as arithmetic under the (very poorly named) Real Numbers. The proof relies on how the prime numbers work (that they are infinite, that every number has one and only one prime factorization)

euclidean geometry is both complete and consistent

I suspect computer languages are more like geometry than real number arithmatic

    FUCK YEAH

I had an old 286 16 mhz machine (with a whopping 2 megs and RAM and 40 megs of hard drive space) running a Searchlight BBS when I was in middle school

we ran LORD and BRE and Falcon's Eye (my favorite) and Tradewars. And this LORD clone as seen through the eyes of a teenager who is really into Conan and pornography named Usurper.

Usurper was p popular on my BBS as well. I mean, yeah... LORD clone from hell. But there was a lot more content, and the randomness of it was great.

The best part was that these games were considered "doors" in that they passed their graphics and crude interface through the pre-existing connection with the main BBS, but were not actually installed on the BBS per se.

Then LORD got Doors. So You, if you liked Doors in your BBS, Imma gonna give your doors some doors so you can step through the doors. into other doors to play games inside your games.

    Doorception.

Blood Bowl: Played the first part of a learning match with Elldren, which was uh, cut short because I accidentally did something and then a popup with literally no way to close it appeared and we had to just alternately end turns until the match ended.

I knew it had a bad interface going in but what the hell

Temp's dropped down to 14 C and it is raining, but that's not gonna help because today the work is all inside and that damn building sure doesn't like giving up heat (little hope for the ventilasjon being installed because most of it was still in pieces and there are wires hanging from the ducts)

    what to watch on netflix

just finished their anime knights of sidonia which was okay as far as animus go (except the absolutely cringe inducing "female emotional panic puts her in bad situation and a bunch of men panic to try and save her and everyone dies as a result" episode which sucked), the space battles were neat and stuff

Millennial politics is simple, really. Young people support big government, unless it costs any more money. They're for smaller government, unless budget cuts scratch a program they've heard of. They'd like Washington to fix everything, just so long as it doesn't run anything.

    ooooh

so they're exactly the same as every other goddamn voter in the history of America ever

well no that's not fair maybe he goes on and makes some better -
    1. Millennials are more liberal than the rest of the country, particularly on social issues, but they get more economically conservative when they make more money.

The younger generation is more socially liberal than their parents?!?

But they get more conservative with higher income!!?!

    2. Millennials don't know what they're talking about when it comes to economics.

OH GOD STOP IT, NO NO MORE. REALLY? MOST VOTERS DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT ECONOMICS? HOLD THE FUCKING PRESSES!
    3. Far less important, but entertaining nonetheless: Millennials don't know what socialism is, but they think it sounds nice.

Um actually your poll's definition of socialism as "government managed economy" is actually pretty wildly misleading and therefore probably a fair number of people disagreed with you just because they know better. It ignores the many "socialist leaning" governments that are still clearly capitalist, but are usually the models that we're referring to in our discussions about socialism, not to mention the political discourse of the older generations are filled with lines like, "Single payer insurance is socialism!", so frankly you're going to have to excuse us if we learned a definition that your poll doesn't agree with.

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

also the article is kinda fair in pointing out that economics is hard a most of us don't understand it (millennial or not)

I wonder if some of the other findings are like that

I mean, I thought it was kinda common knowledge that people who are for government spending cuts often pump the brakes when its cuts of programs they know/care about
