Oh, hey, nice, apparently they're going to try to have Argent for pickup for KS'ers at GenCon.

Played Betrayal at House on the Hill finally tonight.

Two rather lopsided games but it is pretty good random fun.

Yeah Betrayal can be horribly loopsided at times. But its still wikked fun

Why the sudden burst in Betrayal interest for a fairly old game? Did it get a high profile online review or something?

It was featured in a Tabletop episode but thats quite some time ago.

It's basically been sold out everwhere since last Halloween. Printings sell out instantly, and eBay copies go for 2x-3x MSRP or more.

That's what Tabletop and SU&SD have wrought.

I think there must've been a small reprint earlier this year, when I picked it up. The good press from Tabletop and it moving into second edition have given it a real boost.

The price-point isn't as painful as Mansions of Madness, which is the only particularly similar game I can think of, as well.

That, or they'll have copies to lend to backers for the evening to play, since the copies they have there won't be the fancy foil editions, and if you just want to play it rather than have it take up room you could fill with other stuff.

Wish I could go, but nice to know I'll still have it by end of August at this rate.

See I like the concept of Betrayal. And I think the silly fun theme would go down well with people I play with. But I see a massive roadblock in that there's a very good chance I have to hand over a rule book to the traitor and tell them:

'Read this. It is very important you understand and follow these entirely new rules correctly, but I can't in any way help you.'

And then they would give me a look of total fear and/or cock it up entirely.

Maybe it's my inate superiority complex coming out and I'm underselling people, but nobody I play with ever wants to touch a rulebook themselves. And when they do they always seem to get it wrong!

Strange. When I first learned about it and played it (late 2012), there were copies on Amazon, CSI, my FLGS, and more, and it seemed to be that way for nearly a year. I must have just landed in a lull?

According to the price tracker, copies sold through the BGG marketplace went for at or below MSRP from 2010 to 2013. After the second printing came out (in 2010), it seems that it was readily available until the end of 2013.

So, do you guys have any tips for dealing with colorblind players? In this case, someone who is 100% colorblind?

Like, I just picked up Lords of Vegas, and am like..uh, that might not work. And my wife was interested in Takenoko.. which I don't think there's any way to make colorblind friendly.

For Quantum I just swapped in some white dice, and that worked, but I keep realizing how much this sucks.

It depends on whether the problematic colors are publicly known or not. I'm red/green colorblind, and there are quite a few games where I'm unclear about the board state, but I can often just ask. In Quantum, for instance, I can ask which player's cube is on that planet in front of me.

If the problematic colors are on cards in the player's hand, though, the only fix I've found is to add symbols to the cards, such as the Ticket to Ride cards have. Then you can tell the color-blind person that, say, the green cards are the ones with triangles drawn in the corner, and the red cards have circles, and the blue cards have squares, etc.

  • ArcSynArcSyn Registered User regular
Hmm, 100% colorblind is difficult. The only thing I can think of that could maybe help is get some shaped tokens (square, circle, star, or something) that can represent the different colors. Kinda like how Ticket to Ride puts different symbols on the different colors both on the board and on the cards.

In that specific case the symbols are on the board as well, yes?

Like, Lords of Vegas should be workable, because nothing is secret, and the tiles at least have symbols.

But I'm pretty sure Takenoko might be impossible to fix, because there's nothing differentiating the titles except for their colors, right? Unless I wanted to mark the tiles somehow. At least with the cards they could be sleeved.. but not so much for the board-y bits.

I'd have to look at the Takenoko tiles to see if they made them different. I can't remember anything, but I wasn't looking for it either.

With Takenoko, I think your best options are to apply sticky notes to the tiles denoting what color they can grow and cut shapes of vinyl foam tape on the bamboo pieces themselves. Also don't forget to apply notes to the cards denoting what color bamboo is needed as well.

Got Zombie 15! Everything looks great. It uses a softer plastic than I think I've seen in any game, but it makes sense given how the zombies are going to get tossed around.

Bad news: Argent is going to be delayed a month because they caught some mistakes in the printing (the box insert is too snug, and the expansions were printed with a different finish than the base game. >.<)

Any suggestions for someone who is looking to offload some games?

Backstory: Picked up Munchkin Quest and expansion years ago, played them once, never touched again since. I also have the majority (not all) of the Thunderstone pre-Advanced boxes, and then the classic Settlers of Catan. Settlers I could gift to someone, but I'm looking to get rid of it because I want to pick up the Star Trek version of the game that I feel really addresses some of the issues the original Settlers game has, which is attrition and shitty luck of the dice.

I think I've had Munchkin Quest up on BGG for sale forever and not one bite. I may have to just GIFT it to someone to get rid of it, but I'd rather at least try to make a buck or 10 from it.

Biggest turn out ever at our games night, 16 people! One of our new regulars presents a local radio show so had been giving us mentions which is pretty great.

Played a first came of Camel Up (Camel Cup, Amel Cup) which was a lot of fun. Think I'll use it to introduce non boardgamers to the hobby too, it's really easy to understand and everyone loved doing the dice pyramid. Also played Devestation of Indines for the first time which was fantastic, kind of annoyed I missed out on the kickstarter now.

My friends seem to be obsessed with Tales of Arabian Nights lately, finally got to play it the other night, and my wife and I didn't really get the hype. Seemed like another move around and hope RNG favors you game.

Can anyone tell me more about Forbidden Desert? Sounds interesting. How long is a game, how complex are the rules on a scale of Hey that's my fish to Arkham Horror?

Arabian Nights is less about the actual game and more of a story generator, absurd stuff happens and makes a memorable anecdote. I've found it's worth telling people what the game is like before playing it top set expectations.

Forbidden Desert is great. If you've played Pandemic it's a lot like that, take a choice of actions and then the game escalates via drawing cards to affect the storm.

I gave Forbidden Desert to my non-gamer 10-year-old nephew as a birthday present. The rules are very straightforward, like a slimmed down version of Pandemic/FlashPoint. It has beautiful components, plays in 45 minutes or so, and is rather devilish at the higher difficulty levels, but it's definitely on the lighter side of co-ops.

That's been my experience with Betrayal. It appeals to a super casual crowd, but then screws that crowd over by forbidding any help on interpreting the scenario's traitor rules. Every single game I played ended up with the traitor cocking up the rules and making it impossible to win.

If you're willing for one person to be rules ref and GM, then Mansions of Madness is 10,000 times better as a game, even for casual play. Combat is drawing a bunch of colorfully descriptive cards saying how a magnificent jump kick delivered by your elderly professor knocked out a Shuggoth (making you the priest from Braindead), and non-combat is solving some sliding tile puzzles that can be enjoyed and solved by anyone who's picked up a crossword or sodoku puzzle. Very minimal rules memorizing for non-GMs and a great Halloween party game.

Nah, it's not strange. First edition printed in 2004, there weren't many copies and it was really fun so it vanished quick and prices skyrocketed. Second edition came out in a bigger print run with worse components and the price tanked and then THAT got rare and the prices went up again.

We're doing a family game late night tomorrow night. We play a lot of evening games, but this one's going to be more like when we did New Year's Eve and we gamed until midnight which was a big deal for the kids. We have quite a few games that we haven't actually played yet...can anyone give some idea on how bad the learning curve on these are and maybe average game time?

    Penny Arcade Gamers vs Evil
    Quack in the Box
    Munchkin
Forbidden Desert (we've played island, haven't opened desert yet)

We also have some game I bought on clearance at the local game shop with a cloth mat in a red cylindrical tin which I don't remember the name of but I'll ask about that once the wife send me the name of it :)

If you've played Island, Forbidden Desert will be no problem. You also won't ever want to play Island again. Should take you about the same amount of time. About 45 minutes with the kids?

Munchkin is just pick and play a card silliness. Very low rules barrier for entry as long as the kids can read the cards themselves, and you'll muddle through as you go. As for how long it lasts? Always longer than you'd want in my experience :P 30 mins to an hour?

Munchkin has a tendancy to drag, which is part of why it is reviled. Normal games of Munchkin were around 2 hours in my group, which made me institute a 6 Level cap instead of 10 to win during a lunch game (hard cap of an hour), and even then, we didn't finish some games.

If you've played Forbidden Island, then you can easily pick up Desert.

Munchkin is fun when everyone has fun and good cards in their hands. Which means rarely because of hand size limits and since everything is one time use you end up with maybe 1 or 2 cards in your hand anyway. Unless I'm playing wrong somehow.
