For those following the Skyrim Beautification Project, I know that there was concern about the NPCs looking out of place(@LoveIsUnity‌ ). I know I previously mentioned that the skimpy armor/clothes were in the optional mods listed on the site. However, I don't know which mod it is I installed from the list which does feature a skimpy outfit, and has appeared on a few select NPCs(I've encountered maybe 4 or 5 such NPCs in my 100+ hours). My point being, the outfit may come from one of the listed essential mods, just FYI. Screenshot of one such NPC spoilered below. Its mostly SFW, capturing the upper half of an NPC. The lower half, she's essentially wearing panties.

    Dear Past Self,

If you're going to offer to give away hardware, first go home and confirm that you actually still own that hardware and didn't already farm it out last year, you dumbass.

    Thanks,

I'm proud to say I'm running a really NEW toaster.

No...really...I bought it last night. It's sweet - is bagel compatible and everything. It's been a long, dull week when the highlight is replacing a 14 year old toaster.

PC Gamer is doing a last chance giveaway for all the games they've been giving away for the last 5 weeks. Games include:

    SpaceChem
    Dino D-Day
    Really Big Sky
    Gun Monkeys
    GTR Revolution

Some of them require a Facebook account, and at least one of them required a twitter account when I did this a few weeks back.

I'm actually really tempted to take you up on that. I have been wanting to build a desktop PC for a long time but mostly can't afford it. I'm longing for the day my 2 kids are in school so we're not paying through the nose for daycare (and it's not even nearly as bad as some places). It would most likely be a hobby/practice build and I would need to buy everything else. If anyone else wants/needs it, it should absolutely go them if you're really offering.

No, I'm really offering. Just because I didn't actually have the 6770 that I offered @jclast*** doesn't mean I don't have these parts. :P These were removed from my rig just a week or two ago and are still sitting next to my desk, not in the dusty-parts-bin.

If it would help, I could throw in a Geforce 8800GTS GPU too. Another rather dated piece of equipment but better than nothing if money is a factor for you and especially if you're mostly looking to build something for light duty work or the kids to learn on/fool with, etc. I know I don't have any spare cases or hard drives, and pretty sure I gave away my last PSU, but... it's a start?

***Gee, I sure hope jclast likes the HIS IceQ 6950 2GB GPU I sent him instead. :P

Seriously, we're shifting bottlenecks here, and I couldn't be more grateful. :) I can't wait for everything to be gorgeous. After buying a PSU to go with the shiny new video card, I'm looking at a new mobo/RAM combo because I suspect my 2.4 GHz CPU will be the new bottleneck.

Do you have any programming experience? While I can't really help on places to start gaming specific, you really need some degree of programming foundation first. If you're looking for places to start learning programming, I can help.
    Jragghen wrote: »

No, see, that's the thing: I've never made a game, I don't really have any advice when it comes to how to begin making a game. I just know that you'll need to have programming knowledge to be able to have the flexibility in design that you want, so you'll need to start learning somewhere.

The tech subforum has a programming thread which has a multitude of people to talk to/etc. Once you get started, it'll be a nice place to bounce ideas off of.

While the language itself is not necessarily the one you'll want to use, Oracle's online Java tutorial is a nice, free online tutorial with examples, interactive features, and a plethora of examples which will introduce you to object-oriented concepts -I've found it to be higher-level when it comes to those larger concepts than a lot of other online programming tutorials, so you should be able to take the concepts and apply them to other languages. (I found that one when having to teach myself Java for my thesis, and it worked in a pinch).

Next, C++ is an older, archaic language, but it's what a ton of everything you interact with is written in, and you'll find more resources for it online than any other language. Here's an example of one of the tutorials.

Getting into actual games stuff, TIGSource Forums have a bunch of indie dev discussion, including tutorials on the actual game-making process, but they seem to be at least somewhat geared towards people who already have a programming foundation - some of them deal in things like RPG Maker (while owning it, I've never used it, so I have no idea how much access to source code there is through those tools, nor what language they use).

Basically, before you can run, you need to walk, and before you can walk, you need to crawl - there'll be a lot of time learning basic concepts and writing things that don't resemble games before you can start down the path of what you want to try for.

I have programed VB some, more VBA. I took intro classes for C++. I'm taking Java this fall quarter, and than the second course of Java and C++ in following quarters. I started programing in Basic on dos, played with Turbo Pascal (poorly), HTML, little Javascript.

But even with all that, I feel like I don't know where to start. I have done window stuff were you accomplish things, but getting to 3d graphics I have no idea. Making a program to do mortgage math and store customer records is easy.

And last, @paco decided that because I helped him a little getting into this thread, I deserved a gift.

NeHe's tutorials were pretty helpful when I was doing OpenGL stuff in school. I have never touched it but JOGL is OpenGL for Java.

OpenGL definitely delivers on 3d graphics. Depending on what you're doing Unity could be more accessible. I have never written anything in Unity so I don't know.

Stay strong! Focus on your backlog! By the time you get around to playing Transistor, it will be even cheaper. Just look at Bastion. Now you can't even give it away.

Unless of course you want to play Transistor today, in which case, just buy it. I mean, it's not like you're paying full price.

If you're already coding that's a good start. You'll need to get a handle on things like data structures and algorithms, matrix maths, UI design, source control, and project management to avoid tripping over your own feet.

Now if you'd like to make a career out of it, there are a few additional steps to prepare yourself:

    1) Take your half your current income and shred it donate it to charity mail it to Comcast. If you're already a Comcast client, send it to Time Warner.
    2) Spend 20-45 hours of your free time each week volunteering doing an unpaid internship for Monsanto.
    3) Each week go to a football match wearing the away team's jersey and pay close attention to the feedback you receive.
    4) Finally, every time you accomplish something significant, pat yourself on the back then make sure to repeat step 1, only with all of your income.

Yeah, this is my biggest stumbling block. Even with a product like Construct 2, my brain still doesn't grasp coding concepts. It's not like it even forces me to code, simply think in the manner code would, and I still can't seem to think that way. However, my wife seems to be a freaking genius in this, so there's hope yet . . .

I find RPG Maker easier to use in terms of interaction with it's basic concepts but if you want more than a rudimentary "old school" top down turn based RPG game, you also need to understand some measure of what I call "code logic".

I haven't touched Unity past installing their free thingamajig. But they do have a "free try me" version.

I can do ifs thens and elses, those make sense to me, but much of the problem (I think) is my inability to think in abstract forms. I think in purely visual modes, and code is anything but visual.
