I've been living in Boston for the last four years since I moved here for graduate school. Now, I'm moving me (and my better half) back to the Midwest. Why? I'll make more money, she'll make more money, and we'll be closer to both of our families. In my case, that means being closer to my elderly parents (I almost typed patients there) who are both retired and smoke a pack a day.
What does this all mean? Fucking moving, again. I hate moving so much. Given how many of us here are students, recent students, in mobile fields like technology or marketing, I bet we've all moved a lot. As part of my credentialing process I had to try and figure out my last
eight addresses. I've moved twice while finishing my bachelors, twice while working as a nurse in the MICU, twice while in graduate school, and another two times in my current job - that's eight addresses in the last 10 years.
ALSO, SHIT IT'S THE END OF THE SUMMER, ALL THE STUDENTS ARE MOVING!
Let us all talk about MOVING. Tips? Pitfalls? Best experiences? Worst nightmares?
I'll start off, in no particular order.
1. When I got into graduate school in Boston, I drove from Rochester, MN in two days, by myself, to get to a studio apartment I had rented online without seeing it. It was tiny. Probably less than half of the palace I was living in prior by myself. Who moved me in? A buddy I met on World of Warcraft (had never met him in real life). Jared (Oronis the Paladin on Earthen Ring) met me at my shitty apartment to help me move in. This guy helped me move in, drove me to Target to purchase essentials, and DID NOT murder me. Our friendship continues to this day.
Also, man, who doesn't love Craig's List for selling shit? Twice now I've sold my entire life, minus what fits in the back of my Toyota Matrix to drive across the country, with nothing more than "MOVING SALE - ONE DAY ONLY" post on Craig's List.

Biggest goddamn hassle.
Never again, I tell myself. Never again.
But I always gotta for one reason or another.
Right now I'm looking for an apartment then need to unload the truck and get utilities setup by Friday since I start my new job Monday.
Fuck moving.
I hate that shit. June-August seem to be prime moving times not just for school but in general. Why god? Why?
Look online and find some possibly better places (cheaper and/or bigger).
So that's possibly $25 I ain't getting back (filing fee).
The space I moved into was a friend's great grandfather's home. The house is gorgeous. Red brick, three levels. I have the top level all to myself since it's basically just a loft. It's a little hot up here, but it's got a brand new coat of paint, brand new outlets with grounds, fixed plumbing. I'm paying $400 for everything. It's a little far out, but it's really gorgeous out here. Quiet and peaceful. It's a nice change.
Best part? Guy I moved in with has dogs.
This is Kahlua
And this is Bailey
Seriously you guys the moving part fucking blew and it was stressful and I almost lost my bed over it.
But these dogs are pretty aces.

I have had a lot of fun breaking all my shitty furniture apart and tossing it into a dumpster.

What isn't fun? Packing, that is never ever fun.
Oh I've already talk to him a bit on this.
~moving~
You realize that "No, I don't need 300 lbs of crap. Just 30."
If you don't want to pack it, give it to goodwill!
Bonus points if you couple it with the unpack junk as you need it..oh wait I have 2 boxes that I just have not opened in a year oh well I guess they can go in the loft/goodwill method.
I mean, packing, moving and unpacking pretty much everything I own, including an 8 foot couch and untold boxes of books, movies, bags of clothes and whatnot.
But at least I have a place of my own again. 1/3 more expensive than my old place for the same space (rent control is your friend in a big city), but I'm clear of a bad relationship and am getting my shit in order once more.
I did something similar (multiple moves in a short period of time) a few years ago and still have the mental scars of: A) every time I'm thinking about making a purchase, "are you going to want to move this?" is the first thing to cross my mind and B ) I have a storage closet in my building mostly full of boxes because "oh this will be good to pack XYZ in," despite the fact that I don't have any immediate plans to go anywhere.
Moving is the pits. Good luck to any of you who have to do it soon.
Now... I'm across the country instead of across town, no roommate this time, much better job (better pay, better opportunities), and I'm scared shitless.
On the plus side, signing up for the best internet package available gave me a free 2-in-1 computer so there's that. And actually having decent internet will be nice.
One thing I learned during college....roommates are generally the worst ever. Living alone is the absolute best ever.
I'm so scare!!
[style size="small"]hold me[/style]
fix'd
just buy all new stuff at your new place
That would just add to my list!
1. USPS.com
2. Credit Cards / Financial Institutions
3. Student Loan Company
4. Netflix
5. Utilities Cancel / Re Start
Uh, what else?
Right now I'm at the point where I'm moving from a single bedroom in a house to an entire apartment and... I've got a lot of empty space to fill. But organizing everything and putting it all away, building new furniture is fun. I've got some "before" pictures, and I'll take some "after" ones and post a few here.
And I can't seem to find the bolts for my entertainment center anywhere and it's kinda difficult to keep it together otherwise.
Also looking to upgrade to an adult bed by the end of the year as well.
They hopefully finding someone to join me in it.
Move to California instead, trash everything because you will make like 500 dollars a second as a crna.
True that, I'm taking a 15k a year raise by moving back to MN and cutting my rent in half for a larger place. East coast expensive, man.
Anyone have any experience moving booze across state lines? I know it's like, illegal, but if I wanna drag a case of Heady Topper with me from Vermont to Illinois I probably won't be arrested, right?
I would not worry about it, as I heard about a guy who brought a bunch of Russian River growlers from CA to NH and had no issues. Just keep it cool (hardest part).
