So there are a few games coming out for PS4 soon *cough* Destiny *cough* that have caught my eye. This makes me want to get a PS4, but I need more than one or a couple games as a reason to get one.
Also there is the fact that about 3 months ago I built a really kickass gaming computer. It is better than a PS4 in terms of performance and is my preferred platform. I would always choose to buy a game on computer over PS4, every time*. So basically, PS4/console exclusives are what is going to hook me.
Tell me, what would you do if you were in my shoes? Are there enough PS4 exclusives to compel you to buy one? Is the PS4 online gaming service really good, and thus a preferable way to play some games over PC multiplayer (steam, etc)?
*I am open to convincing otherwise. Are there games which, despite the performance difference (which may or may not be noticeable for a particular game) you would still prefer to get on PS4?
I want to be
clear that I am not trying to take the tone of "PC gaming master race" type trolling post - I don't think I've come across that way, if so then I apologize.
Also I was going to post this in the G&T PS4 thread but as I wrote it out it felt more H/A appropriate.

If there's exclusives and you can afford it, why not?
If you don't have a PS3 as of right now, here's the games I'd pick up:
The Last of Us
Assassins Creed IV
GTA5 (which will be out soon supposedly)
Those were the big players. If you pay for PSN access you also get some free games here and there.
If the choice is "get rid of my PC for a PS4" I'd tell you no, gaming culture on PCs tends to be less "fuck yo momma" oriented. Plus steam sales.
I'm in the same boat where I would like Destiny but I'd have to buy a PS4 and I'm not exactly thrilled with the idea of shelling out for a console and then getting raked over the coals each time I want to buy a new/used game. Even moreso with the Halo MC coming out on the XB1 so I'd need to get a XB1 as well and well....no.
I've come to the conclusion that I'll just wait for a PC release, if it doesn't come either I wait till I can get a good deal on a console or I just won't get it. There aren't enough "exclusives" coming out that can justify me tossing out that much cash for a console.
I actually already have Assassin's Creed 4 on PC. GTA 5 is also coming out on PC apparently at the same time as PS4, so there is another example of a game I would probably just get through Steam.
Destiny, No Man's Sky, Metal Gear Solid V, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare
...are non-exclusive. My only exclusive so far is Infamous Second Son which while good is really short.
That said, The wikipedia list of ps4 games was pretty helpful to me in making my decision, and just waiting patiently for good sales. In my case, a 50% trade bonus at gamestop dropped the ps4 to $200, otherwise I was hesitant.
I will buy a PS4, but barring a sick deal this holiday season, or both my PS3's dying, I'm waiting for more exclusives. Probably will punt til maybe holiday season '15 or '16.
Aside from The Last of Us, there's Uncharted 4 coming out in a while and LittleBigPlanet 3 coming out much sooner, The Order: 1886 looks pretty slick, Driveclub if you like driving games, and then as far as stuff that's out already there's Killzone and Infamous, MLB 14 The Show if you're into baseball, plus all the stuff on PSN, and there have been a few smaller titles announced that look pretty interesting and creative but they're brand new IPs and not released yet so, not much to sell on there.
I figure you should wait until you can name 5 games that you want for the system before you get it.
Do... Re... Mi... So... Fa.... Do... Re.... Do...
Forget it...
Just stay away. Unless there is something you are dying for. There is such a rich library on the PC right now and you have such a good computer there's really no such thing as being bored if you are truly interested in your own platform.
I bought a PS3 six years ago and I use it for games an average of once every 3 months at best. Meanwhile I use my PC and laptop almost every week.
I wouldn't call it a waste of money because its a bluray player and such.... but you don't need a PS4 for that
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
Yeah I think I am just going to hold off on getting a PS4 right now. You guys are right, its too early in the console life cycle to justify getting it when I have a perfectly good PC. There are not enough exclusives right now.
I think my real problem is that everything I want to play right now is getting a major patch or update Soon (TM) or is coming out Soon (TM). The PS4 is just my brain going "oooh shiny".
Basically, this applied to me:

The controller is extremely nice, big improvement over the Dualshock 3 and it's awful triggers, and the online store is probably the best (for consoles at least. It's not Steam) for deals and sales. That said! My PC is getting old, and the PS4 rivals it in performance. If I had JUST built a new one? Mmm. Gonna begrudgingly say stick with the PC.
For me I have the system for Bloodborne, UC4, No Man's Sky and The Order. That's what we know of so far. I doubt the next FF will be coming to PC anytime soon, and there are other titles waiting in the wings.
Personally, I'll also be playing DA:I and Shadows of Mordor because I don't want to bother with whether or not my console will be able to play the game.
In this particular instance you could just get a One and play both Halo and Destiny on it. :disagree:
Or I could wait and just get them for PC and spend the $600 that I'd save on strippers and tacos. While like many people I do want to play those games I don't need to play them and so if I'm left waiting a year for a PC port (GTAV I'm looking at you) so be it. Just because I could afford something doesn't mean I should as there are a number of other really nice "luxury" items that I'd rather have over a console.
YMMV obviously.
But yeah, unless you're into sports games or Sony's exclusives, it's a hard sell.
While yes they do go on "sale" I think we all can agree that Steam/HiB has spoiled all of us to the point that we wouldn't consider "half price off a game that came out six months ago" a sale.
All I'm saying is that the prices tend to be higher per game on console in the long run, at release its the same price but as time goes on you statistically tend to find a better price on PC.
Also all that being said.....Bloodborne
I have all the consoles. This is how often I use them, relative to each other:
PC: All the time
PS4: Sometimes, when I feel like it
Xbox One: Hardly ever
Wii U: Literally never
PS3: About on par with my PS4 usage
Xbox 360: Disconnected on a shelf
Wii: Disconnected in a bucket filled with random garbage and clothes that don't fit anymore
Vita: Currently, quite often
3DS: Currently, not at all
iPhone: Fuck iPhone gaming
I go through utility phases between my two handhelds.
I'll leave out the rest of the consoles going back to my Atari 2600.
Suffice to say: I'm quite happy that I own a PS4, even if I only use it sporadically. I used it non-stop during the Destiny Alpha. If you want day one Destiny and can afford a PS4, go for it.
Console gaming is for playing with a controller on the couch in front of a big TV. If you like that, it's FAR easier to just buy a console (in my opinion) rather than convert your computer into a "console."
It takes, usually, about 3 years for there to be enough exclusives to know if the raw number of games is a reason to buy a console. The rest is aesthetics.
Its pretty great
This is similar to me, except I have no vita, replace the 3DS with a DS, and an iphone with an android phone.
The big differences for me is that I don't have a PS4 yet because my MS/Sony systems are flipped. My 360 got all the love, my PS3 almost never. I use my Xbox One almost daily, but not much gaming since I've been through most of my games on it so far.
I'll get a PS4 eventually, but much prefer the MS controller so I need the system to get more games I can only get there.
there's been a lot of speculation that its being ported to PC after the console version are sorted out, but if you want it now then you absolutely should get a PS4 for it.
But its like "I have this amazing device with a ton of games on it. It works really well and I like it. But there's this other device that has like 4 games I can't get right now. Its about $400 and a weaker machine than what I already have"
Is it worth $400 to play like 5 games and use netflix?
Maybe I'm coming at this another way though, cuz I just spend about 2 months debating whether to build a gaming PC for the living room, or get a PS4 in the UK. In the end I decided I want to turn my PC into a cute little steambox once that whole system gets moving cuz I think thats the future.
I doubt it, it's the same crew that made Halo, and other than the first 2 Halo games they haven't ported over a single one of their console games to PC since. They've stated themselves they aren't interested in porting to PC anymore.
""It's a huge challenge to ship four platforms and a massive opportunity to reach a new audience," community manager Eric Osborne told IGN. "We know there are a lot of people out there asking for PC and we know that there are a lot of gamers that would willingly give us money, but what we have to do is make sure we're focused enough to bring a good experience to any platform that we ship on. What we 100 percent are not going to do is spread ourselves so thin that it negatively harms the other platforms. So right now we have the four platforms, which is a lot to focus on."
Osborne reportedly acknowledged the possibility of a PC version, but was firm about it not being in development alongside the console ones. That means if a PC version ever does come, it will be quite a wait."
Was their interview quotes. I suppose its not a "No" but it's also not in development.
I mean I love my PC gaming, I have like 600 steam games in my library and about 20 on Origin and about 40 on Gog.com, but I also really like sitting down and playing games on my PS3/PS4 (And I still play PS2 and PS1 games.) theres' just too many good console exclusives and there will be in the future as well just like there always has been. A lot of Xbox games seem to hit PC as well, but that hasn't typically been true for the Playstation hardware line with the exception of some big multi-platform releases. Plus if you have a good TV it's a great experience and a great addition to a living room entertainment space. Gaming on PC is great, especailly for MMO's and strategy games, but there's something about being able to sit on my couch and play on my 48" LED and not having to tweak and mess with settings to get my game to run smooth all the time that makes consoles easier to play with. Also $400 is not a huge asking price when a decent gaming PC runs you a lot more. Mine was $1300, and it still fails on some games that my console will run smooth as silk (I'm looking at you, Watch_Dogs and Black Flag.) so they both have their pro's and con's. PC's are always more powerful and ever evolving, but the cost to keep up with the evolution is not always pretty, and game optimization just isn't there in the PC realm, especially lately with this big fight going on between Nvidia and AMD. A console may be weaker hardware wise, but they are far easier to optimize for, so you end up getting games that look great and run really smoothly with less hardware needed under the hood. In the end it's up to you, a PS4 is kind of an investment into it's future as well, considering it doesn't have a huge line up of games yet since it isn't even a year old (Got a lot on the horizon for the next 6 months though.)
I got a PS4 Destiny bundle today.
Maybe not the most financially smart decision, but whatever!
Quick edit: I'm asking for a friend.
Yes it is
