Over the weekend I purchased a Premium Xbox 360, and one of the first things I noticed on the system setup was the amount of space on my 20 gig hard drive that was available. Out of the box it reads 12 gigs available, wtf is this about? How is it advertised 20gigs when in reality it only has 12?
Can someone explain why it's gimped, and if possible how do I free up the 8 gigs?
Some of it is taken up by the videos and music that come on the drive. Delete them.
The rest is allocated for system settings, firmware patches, and Xbox backwards compatibility patches. There's also a swap partition or three on the drive.
It's about seven gigs that is not available to you, so you'll only really ever be able to use ~12GB on your 20GB HDD.
But the worst part is you missed out on the Xbox 360 Elite that comes with a 120GB drive (which will end up being ~103GB usable), HDMI output, a slightly lower operating temperature, a black finish, and for only $79 bucks more. You would have had to wait a little while, but it would have been worth it if you hadn't bought a 360 yet.
