[The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth] Afterbirth+ is live!
Wow, they really scaled up Mom's heart didn't they. Not helping that I was playing a glass canon with 4 hearts. (granted it was lazurus so if I had died I would have had another shot) still glad I went into it with as much firepower as I did a few more seconds and I probably would have been toast.
So anyway Eden unlocked. What is my randomised starting item? The poop (and a brother bobby).
The best combo I had so far was the levitating tear that you control, Mom's wig that spawned constant self destructing spiders, a follower that ate regular hearts and spat out iron ones, and a follower that would occasionally shoot a fly.
Also a gimp mask that caused me to spit out items whenever I got hurt, which were often hearts, which got turned into iron hearts and fed back into the cycle.
I still only beat the final boss with a single heart remaining, but it was fun having a minion swarm buffer to wipe out all the spawns.
Question: a devil door opened when the big chest appeared, and I went for the chest and ended the game. Was that just a normal devil door or another boss fight waiting?

So is everything about Eden completely random? I've just had 1 run so far, thought she was pretty OP with the Book of Revelations, it being random makes more sense.

If it's like old Isaac, before you've unlocked Sheol permanently you can get there via the Devil Room spawning after Mom's heart is killed. It would have contained the doorway down rather than any deals.

It is, I've only killed Moms Heart twice and managed to kill Satan due to a devil room popping up. Similarly, an Angel room after the heart will take you to the Cathedral. Odd that my 2 heart kills have given me one of each so far.
So anyway Eden unlocked. What is my randomised starting item? The poop (and a brother bobby).

Yup stats/health/gender/hairstyle and 2 items are all randomised.
The trick is you have only use Eden once per a heart kill (possibly other bosses) so you can't just restart until you get a good roll.
I finally beat Mom, all it took was the devs lowering the difficulty tremendously. Now its time for me to see the new stuff in all its horror.
Was the difficulty lowered that much? The original Binding of Isaac got harder the more you played -- are we sure that people aren't comparing their first run of Rebirth to their last run of the original?

Also, there's Hard mode now.
Yeah, part of me is dreading getting the Everything is Terrible achievement
Just finished a Lazarus run, started off getting spider infested shot and a bunch of damage upgrades which were awesome, then found a reroll room (does the number on the dice make a difference? this was a 6) that turned me into lord of the flies with technology 2, homing tears and random tear effects.
Homing & laser & charm/fear/paralyse/poison/fire is *insane*. My damage was for shit, but that didn't matter when everything in the room was constantly running away from me or hitting each other.
But it's hard to compare with my earlier playthroughs as there are so many variables. Original BoI was tough but I learned to become good, on a crappy laptop with keyboard controls and slowdown that probably saved me. Wrath kicked my ass and I didn't really get very far with it, but I'd put that down to a long break from the game, already being in 'Everything is Terrible' mode, and a new computer that no longer had slowdown.
Rebirth I'm playing on the fast computer, but I'm also now using a 360 pad and I think analogue twin sticking is making life much easier. Also earlier levels seem longer now so you're likely to be more tooled up when things start getting tough.
I do think it's a bit easier, but that's mostly because of the new items, some of which being very good. It sorta decreases the chance of getting a dud item.
I mean, if you want to get technical, the game is actually harder because they fixed quite a few of the cheesy exploits you could pull.
Managed to beat the timer and the room after, largely because I blew up the arcades instead of spending ten minutes gambling. Also because Azazel, it's a bit cheap character :P
Found like three sources of flight on the run - on an already flying character. Figures. Flight is really super good in many rooms, wall spiders can't do anything if you're next to them, spikes are irrelevant and.. yeah.
Was doing the bean challenge, which is no tears and 99 butt bombs and bean active, so I was like "Cool, I can probably get some good effects from pills because I don't have to worry about negative pills that much" and then I got the bombs are key pill and cried.
Sidenote: If you want to practice bomb use and placement. That is a good challenge to do.
Pills seem much more likely to be bad without a PhD than they were before, but maybe that's confirmation bias and me being terrible at spotting randomization

Yeah, the fact that you can walk into a treasure room, and usually don't see wiggle worm or lemon mishap makes a difference. The game does push back, though.

I think the only item I have seen that's an outright dud is guppy, since the one health thing is still awful.
That and Ludovico technique, since I'm terrible at steering it.
You can't have infinite soul hearts anymore, which removes a huge exploit from the game.
I dunno, man. Dark Bum says otherwise.
Okay so it's not infinite but it's more or less a completely renewable source of health. Dark Bum is seriously one of the best items in the game, imo.

Relic used to be an almost-won run if you got it early in the old Isaac; Dark Bum is the Relic on steroids.
Also, Dead Cat isn't a dud item if you're already at 1 health (or 0 health and you find it in a chest, in which it will give you one health). I've been going really hard on devil deals in Rebirth so far, so I've found myself taking it a lot, even if I'm already Guppy.
Did a successful Cain run through to Sheol and killed Satan.
First treasure room - Chocolate Milk. Alright, off to a good start.
Second treasure room - Technology. Unfortunately, maybe because of Chocolate Milk, or due to my lack of +Tears, it shot like ass. Too slow, could've gotten me killed. Luckily...
First Satan room after second boss - Mom's Knife. 2 Hearts? Meh, worth it. Proceed to wreck game until...
Second Satan room after fifth boss - Brimstone. It was only 1 Heart, so I took it, but forgot that with Mom's Knife, the two didn't have synergy... or they didn't before. Now? You launch Mom's Knife, and then literally 10 knives go flying across the room in a straight line after that go the whole distance of the room. Fucking EPIC.
Just had an insane Maggie run that included Number 1, Polyphemus, Mom's Contact, enough stat boosts to bring damage to maximum and range to 5, shielded tears that blocked enemy shots, Pulse Worm, flight, Rotten Baby, and Dark Bum. Easily got Mama's Boy from that; why dodge bullet hell, when you can just shoot through it?

I forgot how much I liked this game. Not having to dick around with controller applications on PC makes me like it so much more.
I agree it feels easier - I beat mom on my first run, though that probably had to do with finding a devil room early on that gave me a fucking enormous blood laser attack. And then I got the eye in the back of head, so I was spitting out TWO fucking enormous blood lasers. Looking forward to (re)discovering all the cool stuff this game has to offer.
Had a good Judas run. Flaming Tears, Saggitarius, Cricket's Body (splash tears) and enough +Tears upgrades to be a minigun. Shit died fast, but it was also detrimental to my own health because random explosive tears meant I lost out on the Sheol opportunity after Mom's Heart. Sucks, because starting with Judas is a pain in the ass.
Yeah, every time I see dark bum I basically think to myself "this run is now a win. I can only lose if I play really poorly."

Richard "Dick" Hammer was (of course) playing Rebirth this morning (for my timezone) and ended up with a laser-brimstone-number one-ludovico... Thingummybob. With armies of friendly flies and spiders just for the hell of it.

I played my first run, and beat Mom on my first run. Upgrades were everywhere, bosses and enemies were minimal threats, I always had just enough keys or bombs, and bosses died before I could really understand them. Mom was dead before I could figure out what her attacks were and how to dodge them.
In the original, I only saw Mom once and I died in about ten seconds.

I think you underestimate how much important RNG is in this game. About half of my runs fall flat before I even get to mom, and the other half usually beat Satan. You just got a lucky roll on your first try this time.
Not to say the game is entirely luck--the best streamers can make almost any run a winning run, or at least a deep run. I'm not that good yet (and frequently go on tilt), so I do tend to rely heavily on getting enough HP ups/spirit heart generators (of which Rebirth has been more kind on the latter and much harsher on the former, meaning I have many more runs that fizzle just because I don't have much HP and take a bunch of damage on a boss).
In my quest to try to beat either Sheol or Cathedral with Judas (and ultimately the Chest, but still haven't opened that yet), I had a run with him that resulted in Cultist Robes (which seemed to max out damage) and a lot of health + tear + shot upgrades. I also beat the timer to Mom and opened the boss rush. My choices were Taurus, Mom's Wig, Kamikaze! and ... THE WAFER.
Now it's come to my realization that there's just so many runs to do with ALL the characters. Each one has to beat Mom's Heart, Sheol, Cathedral, The Chest and Boss Rush. Ffffuuuu...

Early on they just spit three projectiles and pause, so you get used to being somewhat in their line of fire
Then a few levels later it's brimstone everywhere
