"Sony announced today it has discontinued the 20 GB PlayStation 3 model due to its poor demand. PS3 was available in two configurations; one featured a 20GB hard disk drive (HDD) and had a suggested retail price of $499, while the second features a 60GB HDD and built in Wi-Fi adapter and multiple memory card slots for $599.
The 60GB model was outselling the 20GB configuration at a 10-to-1 ratio.
Over the last few days, several stores dropped the 20GB model from its listings, including the official Sony store, Sony Style. "
It seems rather odd to me that the 60gig model was selling so much better. I thought it was the other way around (I haven't seen any 20gig PS3s in stock, but pretty much everyone is stocking the 60gig model).
My understanding is they manufactured many, many more 60 gig models than 20 gig ones, so I'm not suprised in the least that it was outselling the lower-end one. At least we can shut up the "Price difference is only $100" people.
So am I the only one out of all of us that own the system that has a 20GB model? I do kind of wish I grabbed the 60GB, mainly for the wi-fi, but I hear they'll be releasing an adapter later. I just hope they don't ass rape me for it.

"Poor demand?" If that's from Sony's press release, that's PR-speak at its worst. The 20-gig model ALWAYS sold better since it was cheaper, it was just manufactured in limited numbers. The real reason Sony discontinued it was because they lose more money on it than the 60-gig model.
So will this affect PS3 sales? Or were the number of 20GB models out there even large enough to make much of an impact on sales figures?

Cue a bunch of stupid edits of your post that look like this:

yes lol
Or maybe now that I've pointed out how retarded that would be, nobody will do it.

Drez that's wrong. XD
I didn't see this happening. I completely forgot about the 20GB model existing too. I guess people figured that if they were going to pay so much for a console, they may as well pay for the bigger and better model.
On the bright side, they'll be able to use the blu-ray drives from whatever they recall to make more 60GB models. :P
Makes sense. They lost more money on it and produced many more of the larger HDD version anyway. So much for anyone hoping for a cheaper PS3 option, though.

I can't help but feel this is a bit of self-sabotage.
I mean, you make two product, one inferior to the other. Of course the inferior one isn't going to sell as much.
I don't understand why the cheaper versions of both the xbox 360 and PS3 weren't just smaller hard drive space. Why did they actually prevent other standard features from being implemented as well.
Does anyone have the Core vs. Premium purchased ratio?
They're full of shit. The 20GB system wasn't like a 360 Core system. The 20GB system was all that 95% of their consumer base would ever need. I, myself, have little use for another 40GB of HDD space on a console, and I've no need of HDMI (I doubt anyone actually needs it).

Kor, it was more than just harddrive space being the difference. There was some HDMI stuff invovled too, and I think USB ports and other jazz.
See post above.
Thats my point.
Why didn't they release two feature identical products, with the only variation being storage space.
Instead, you make two products with different features. Make the cheaper one the inferior one, then act surprised when no one wants the inferior product.

And because you don't need it, no one else on the planet needs it.
Losing a 20GB option does suck, since (as opposed to the 360) the baseline model is actually reasonably functional. The thing is, if Sony wouldn't have said anything about it, no one would ever know. I haven't seen a Core 360 in stores since a few months after launch, but Microsoft hasn't said anything about reducing or ceasing production of them.
In case anyone was doubting it due to the source or lack thereof (I know I was), this is true.
Just as Microsoft's about to introduce a new Xbox 360 SKU, Sony's announced they're removing one from the marketplace. Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today they've officially dropped the PlayStation 3 20GB SKU and will no longer be offering the cheaper, Wi-Fi less model to North American retailers. Sony says a 10-to-1 retailer demand for the 60GB SKU has prompted the move.
Don't panic, though, as 20GB owners will continue to receive the same customer service support they were guaranteed upon purchasing the machine. The architecture between the 20GB and 60GB SKUs are the same, save for a few feature differences, so the shift is minimal from a customer relations and development perspective -- unlike Microsoft, who cannot drop support for the Core SKU, as that model doesn't come with a built-in hard drive.
"At launch, we offered two separate models of PLAYSTATION 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB sku, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America," said SCEA senior director of corporate communications Dave Karraker.
"In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model," he concluded.
And so it's official -- less than six months after the launch of the PS3, the 20GB SKU is officially dead.

I'm pretty sure the 20 GB had HDMI too
Yeah, it had HDMI too. The only differences I think were the hard drive, built-in wireless, and memory stick slots.
I think the more important question is when will they be removing the emotion engine chip?
I'm pretty sure Sony execs have said that it would be removed in the U.S. and Japan in the near future, but I can't find the link ATM.
Edit: Henroid, the chip was removed in Europe to save about $30 in manufacturing costs, and emulation was switched to software-based (which isn't nearly as good).
Yeah, blowing that $20 upgrade from an Elite 360 to a 20GB PS3 was a pretty bad idea. Now it's still $120 difference and the gap is much closer now that the Elite has a 120GB HD and HDMI, even though it's only HDMI 1.2a, the average consumer isn't going to be able to tell the difference or give a damn.

It's the illusion of choice. They make the lesser system inferior and undesirable intentionally, because they want people to buy the premium version. But this way they can still say "Starting at $299" or "Starting at $499".

Yes. Everything else was just speculation.
I wonder if they'll discountinue the 60 gig model for the same reasons.
Syke!
Despite my vitriol against them I will eventually get a PS3. Maybe Christmas. Hopefully the 60 gig will see a price drop by then.
edit: and HDMI
Tempting, but that's too evil even for me.

All the folks I know around here have 60GB models. I haven't seen a single 20GB one off store shelves.

Hard drive space isn't that expensive.
Okay, so give me identical features, and give me a bigger size difference in the HDD.

Does that even make sense? WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?!
I wonder if the news will make developers even more edgy, or if they'll think sales of the 20GB were too low to care about.
Edit: Yep, this move does put the overpriced Elite in a better position.

No, this is Sony realizing that something they made wasn't selling.
And because you don't need it, no one else on the planet needs it.

Well, either way they still accomplished the same thing. Elite 360, over $100 cheaper than the PS3 with double the HD space!
In case anyone was doubting it due to the source or lack thereof (I know I was), this is true.
Wait what?

In Euroland, it was never even there to begin with.
But hey, Sony were kind enough to put the price up anyway, bless 'em.

The European PS3 doesn't have the emotion engine, and they said they had planned to eventually take it out of the PS3s in other regions.
