    That's not what he said.

Okay. I think it's implied either way, but let's go ahead and operate on the assumption that "doesn't have what it takes to be a ghostbuster" is a statement with any real merit at all. I won't argue against the three women he chose, because they're all awesome, but I have no idea what qualifies them as Ghostbusters material more than any other comedic actress out there.

Going back to this, there are tons of women out there who would make great Ghostbusters even if you just wanted to remake the first movie with gender-swapped characters.

But if you're making a new Ghostbusters movie the only requirement is "funny", and I'm reasonably sure you can find a bunch of great female comedians.

Of course, a straight remake could be hilarious.

I'm imagining Maya Rudolph or Amy Poehler doing this scene right now and it makes me laugh.

I watched them stream this the other day. They literally got an hour and forty-minutes in before they saw or heard any part of the alien. It was pretty dire.

Personally I'd like to see them do something new with it and not just have a bunch of female versions of the original crew.

Hey, this new ghostbusters, is it a direct sequel or a reboot? Or a spin-off?
Either could work but all anyone wants to talk about is OMG girls!

I've heard reboot. Which is the main thing sabotaging my enthusiasm, no matter how many excellent all-female fantasy casts I imagine.

Yeah, I think I'm about done with reboots. The fact that it seems to happen every other week in comics isn't actually a good reason to do it in film, even comic book(-ish) films.

I'm kinda hoping Melissa McCarthy is playing the exact same role she did in The Heat.

    Which I liked very much.

    It was really funny!

And this has nothing to do with my deep and unconditional love for Sandra Bullock. Because, while she is totally wonderful and incredible and I bet she'd be the best person to have lunch with or like go to a theme park with and maybe we could do each other's nails and talk about boys and stuff...

Kinda lost my train of thought there.

Anyway yeah, Melissa McCarthy is a really funny lady and actually I'm looking forward to the new Ghostbusters after having seen the cast list.

Quick idea here, would it seem exploitative if I had a property, and a central, not main character who was a woman with incredible healing and regenerative powers she used on herself and her allies? Most of the action scenes involve her taking a lot of damage, healing from it instantly in a green glow, then quickly healing or kicking ass?

Like for example, a plane flies low over the street, she jumps out, skids across the ground (leaving bloody smears wherever she hits), then she gets up, glowing green, perfectly fine, and starts negotiating with hostage takers outside the building her transport was aiming her at?

edit: Ideas that sound good in my head sometimes sound bad when explained.

This is a small part of why I'm leery of it being a reboot

The other part is that there are innumerable stories that could still be told in the world established by the original films, without going back to square one

Yeah but the original story is from 30 years ago

Reboots are bad when they are poorly written

Godzilla is an example of a reboot done pretty well.

I agree with a lot of this, but especially the Sandra Bullock stuff. I've been in love with her since Speed. I even made myself watch The Net.

Reboots are an alright idea if you think that your target audience might not have seen the original work. Ghostbusters II came out twenty-five years ago.

You can also make some kind of sequel or prequel that doesn't require having seen the original work, but people might be a bit uninterested in watching Ghostbusters 3 if they haven't seen the previous movies because of that number at the end.

The one from '99 was no more a Godzilla movie than Starship Troopers was anything to do with the novella.

Everything other than the monster bits was some of the worst cinema I've ever seen. That story was over-stereotypical drek in it's purest form. Everyone in my theater when I saw it (admittedly about 10 people if that) were all groaning at how bad that crap was.

i'm frowning at you cilla i'm frowning so hard

but yeah, still way better than the 99 Godzilla. :P

I didnt love the non-monster bits but didn't hate them either, which is much much better than almost every other Godzilla movie

Further, the monster segments were awesome

It was, therefore, a good reboot

Doesn't need to be perfect to be a good reboot

Its okay, as a generic monster action blockbuster, but you have to forget the title on the poster. Even then it's schlocky and full of dumb, like helicopters flying through Manhattan at the monster's head height where it can conveniently bite them in half, instead of actually using the fact that they can friggin' fly.

Haha, VHS! That was a thing that happened wasn't it? Wow, I've not thought of those in a long time…

Actually, there was one good thing about the '99 movie; the cartoon based on it, where the surviving egg you see in the final shot of the film hatches and imprints on Broderick's character and fights its undead robo-zombie mother. Using the radioactive fire breath anything named Godzilla should have because it's iconic.
Pity it got buried under poke/digimon

You can get some serious exponential growth going without even needing to cross land borders
