Hmm. On the one hand, I'm interested in details about GU, because I thought the overall .hack premise was really interesting, and would like to see it executed on well. But on the other hand, I can't think of an easy way to highlight what specific parts I'm most curious about, as relates to improvements over the earlier games, without antagonizing people who were fans of them. My opinions were really overwhelmingly negative, and I don't think I can engage the subject without that contempt flavoring everything.
So I guess I'll go do some independent research. Thanks!

They also add new weapon styles every game, so you're not just playing the Twin Daggers character, you can also play scythe, or 2h greatsword, or GUNZ in the third game. It fuckin owns
I would say only problem was by the 3rd game you're pretty much an unstoppable God of Destruction. So combat gets a lot easier.
and since you're skeith I know who you are most likely
do tell
my guesses so far
yata is wiseman
haseo is sora
endrance is elk
that kid who leads moon tree feels like helba
piros is piros
why do i love these games so much
.hack//G.U. is tied into the original quadrilogy in a number of ways.
But not in those ways.
ZEN DON"T READ!
Actually he's right about all of those except Zelkova, the moon tree kid. And to be fair, there might not actually even BE a person behind that guy.
Endrance is the same person who played the World V1 as Elk. Dude never got over Mia "dying", which the Ida virus (and the powers behind it) took shape as that cat to get to him.
He's right about Haseo as well. Way back in The World beta, so the original anime, Sora was controlled by the four year old person that would grow up to play as Haseo in The World V2. This isn't really important other than giving a reason for why Haseo has the power of Skeith, since he doesn't remember any of his time in the beta version. Though apparently he remembers his time as Sora in one of the novels and gets a new form with wings and Skeiths old weapon from the first series? Whatever the novels are (even more) dumb and mostly untranslated.
Yata was Wiseman, as well as several other PC's across the series. Dude gets around.
And yeah, Piros is Piros from the first set of games.
Or were you just trying to fake him out?
I just didn't remember any of that factoring into the story of GU, so I thought it was wrong. I remember elk and piros from the original anime and 4 games, but not wiseman and sora. Isn't the kid in the recent-ish cg movie named sora?

Yeah, but really, once you've leveled up that high in an "MMO", you're usually doing stuff like that anyway. It makes sense at least!
I only ever played the first .hack game but my favorite character was that one girl who wanted to collect every item in the game. I liked how you found out that in real life she was just a bored housewife.

It doesn't factor into the plot of GU much, other than being a good explanation of why those characters have the Epitaph powers, and why Endrance is so obsessed with that cat.
I don't think the character in the newer CG movie has anything to do with Haseo or OG anime Sora.
And good lord is the plot moving at a snail's pace. I honestly wonder when it'll actually become a game where you fight and gain exp.
The Visual Novel approach isn't a bad thing, per say. It's actually pretty well-written too. The only thing that really irks me is that you can't save during these long stretches of cutscenes: you have to wait until you reach a save prompt.
You can save during battles, but again, I have no idea when you're actually going to start fighting.
Started FF13, I can see why it gets all the complaints about being so linear in the beginning. It doesn't really bug me all that much though, it's honestly about the same as the beginning of most final fantasies/jrpg's, it's just more blatant about it. I think the big thing is that there haven't been any towns or npc's to talk to.
I just encountered Terry in Dragon Quest VI. For those in the know, he was the lead character in the old Game Boy Spinoff, Dragon Warrior Monsters where he was still a young kid.
I can tell at a glance that his story is going to be crazy depressing, and that is just so not okay as a follow up to happy colorful Pokemon adventures.
X-2 is the most blatant incest I have seen outside of a fire emblem game
Oh God, yeah.
I do not understand how someone thinks, "Hey, you know what we should do with Rikku's dorky-lookin' brother? Make him obsessed with fucking his cousin."
And I am equally baffled that everyone signed off on it.

Well, I just finished up the first chapter of Trails in the Sky.
Going to be honest, I think that was the best JRPG I've played since Final Fantasy Tactics. At least in my opinion!
The gameplay was pretty solid, even if it was only the occasional boss fight that was truly challenging. I think the overall plot was pretty decent all in all, though nothing spectacular. The character development and dialogue were out-of-this-world fantastic though- easily the highlight of the entire game for me.
So I guess consider that a hearty recommendation if anyone else is curious about giving the game a go.
Well, I can’t disagree that there isn’t a lot more that could have been done with Rikku. Far as I see it though, it’s a pretty logical progression of her arc in X. She set out to make sure Yuna didn’t die on her pilgrimage, and after achieving that, she wants to show Yuna a good time and pull her out of the slump she was in between the two games.
She also has some of the more insightful lines with Zanarkand, where she’s able to get Yuna’s point across to Cid by saying “It’s like someone turning the ruins of Home into a theme park”. A lot of the good writing is focused around Bevelle and Zanarkand, dealing with faith, tradition and change.
X-2 is cool because it shows you what it’s like when characters who are deprived of a real childhood get to cut loose. Rikku is 17, Yuna is 19. Previously the Al Bhed were ostracised throughout Spira, and Yuna grew up without any parents and with a huge amount of pressure hanging over her (as well as being part Al Bhed). Relieved of those burdens, they get to act their age (younger than that, really). It's a nice change of pace to go from this life-threatening quest to save to world to a boyfriend hunt (and along those lines, Rikku's crush on Gippal is pretty well done).
X-2 has some interesting ideas and execution, but the dialogue just can't back it up. There's some good stuff but also a huge truckload of hot garbage and it just isn't all that worth it imo.

See, this is why X-2 bugs me so damn much.
Because everything you're saying there I totally agree with from a big-picture point of view.
But the actual dialogue and portrayal of certain characters completely flubs the execution. Yes, it's a fantastic idea to set a game after these kids have completed their quest to save the world to see how they try and figure out how to live normal lives, but the game eventually gets cold feet and goes right back to the "life-threatening quest" plot again. Yes, it's a fantastic idea to see how Yuna and Rikku behave when they realize they have the ability to just do whatever they want and have fun, but in the case of Rikku (who is neither a new character like Paine nor the main character like Yuna) it comes at the expense of straight-up ignoring both personality traits (she acts like a ditz but is highly intelligent) and motivations (she wants to be mature and taken seriously like Lulu is) that the previous game pretty explicitly established.
There are certainly parts that are well done (both Zanarkand and the relationship between Rikku and Gippal, like you mentioned), but it's just such a mess. And for me, the bad writing ends up outweighing the good that's there.

Also, fuck them for what they did to Rikku.
Literally the only line I like without reservations.

However, the game also serves in hindsight as the kind of storytelling techniques Toriyama tends to throw into FF games.
1. A focus on one or two principal characters from the original game, while everyone else is given a cameo at best.
2. Original characters that are inserted into the narrative but ultimately lack much of the development of their predecessors.
3. Dumb costumes for the ladies
4. Alternate/lookalike versions of existing characters
5. Time travel

Plus there's all the offputting fanservice.
But it didn't stick the landing.
Mixed metaphors.
like was arkham asylum intended to be only one game but then it was really good and they made arkham city?
Yeah majoras mask is good
and what the heck Vow
I would not recommend either of those games on the basis of their story, especially city
lmao
