May cat's ear is bleeding again

My cat's left ear has started bleeding. It was bleeding a bit about a week ago and I thought it was because he had caught it with a nail as I could clearly see the scratch. But this morning he started shaking his head and scratching again and when I looked it was REALLY bloody and cleaning it with a tissue was pretty full.

Normally I would guess ear mites but I don't see any black flea gunk and his other ear is fine and the other cat's ears are fine as well. They're both indoor cats. I can't get him to the vet before Saturday so would it be worth it to get an over the counter ear mite medicine to use or should I hold off? I'd like to get him some relief and if it fixes the problem before I have to go to this new vet I have, who's pretty shady and I don't like to give them money, then that would be great.

edit: Never mind all; called the vet and they said it's not fleas. He'll have to hold up until Friday night. This can be closed.
