Dear Firefox. Stop being dumb.

Well great. After a reboot, I have yet again been stricken by the bookmarks deleted problem. But wait! Now the thing won't keep my additional customized buttons, nor will it remember I turned off the bookmark bar. Closing the program and bringing it back resets it all. And I can't even add new bookmarks.

What the hell firefox. What the hell. Anyone have any solutions for this before I start having to just hit it?

You'll likely have bookmark backups in:

    C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\randomlettersandnumbers\bookmarkbackups

Check it out, copy the latest few to a new spot, uninstall, reinstall, copy over to your profile, profit

Or try the Mozilla Support forums. This is a known issue and has a far less drastic fix than reinstalling. I just can't remember it right now...

Also, checking for updates only sees incremental patches. If you're still on 1.x.x I don't think it will tell you about 2.x.x. Chech "Help|About Mozilla Firefox" for the actual version number.

Your profile is probably just borked. Deleted the old one and make a new one:

    http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile

You can try to copy over your old bookmarks and stuff from the old one if you want. Its either this though, or a crazed extension fucking stuff up.

also, use an online bookmark site, then not only will this not matter, but you can get to them from any computer.

My Firefox just had this problem, the same problem as the OP, a few ago and the backups worked like a charm. The only thing it didn't properly restore was the bookmark toolbar. It saved the folder for the toolbar, so I just moved all of those files into the other folder. It was really simple and quite painless to fix.
