Video Game Movies

edited April 2007 in Games and Technology
On a whim I decided to check and see if there was any news on the Halo movie that is supposed to be made here real soon. I read on a couple sites that it is slated for a release this summer? Is that correct? I haven't heard diddley squat about the movie in ages. I wasn't even sure if they were still making it.

Which brings me to my next question. Given the fact that Mr. Lord of the Rings himself is producing it and "heading" the visuals, what are the chances that this movie is not going to go the way of many video game movies before it: Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, and ....Mortal Kombat?

If this has already been covered, because I did do a search, please feel free to degrade and humiliate me with slurs of "n00b", "OLD!", and "STFU".

FYI, it was canned, but then put back on track, picked up by some other studios. Forget which ones. But it's definitely not scheduled or on track for summer, we know that. Possibly summer 2008.

Last I knew, they were *hoping* it'd get picked up, but nothing has happened yet. I'm pretty sure it's still completely dead for the time being.

Production was ceased, but it's not entirely dead. As for the funding, it wasn't so much as a "lack" of funds as it was Fox and Universal Studios (both studios who co-opted to make the film, jointly) started to get things in motion when they realized "holy fuck, we can't swing these price tags".

Basically, when Microsoft optioned the script, they put in a clause that basically demanded the agreeing studio(s) empty its coffers and not to skimp on anything that might dilute the finished product. They wanted to blank checks and instead they got blank stares.

    I'm there.

I got that on DVD for 5 bucks a few years ago at Best Buy. Totally worth it. I put that in the DVD player whenever I need cheering up.

The Wizard is still the best Video game related movie, though.

Mortal Kombat is the single best, most bearable and yes, even entertaining of the video game movies.

I really don't accept much debate on this matter.

And also: fuck Silent Hill so hard. You have everything going for you. You looked beautiful, you sounded beautiful, and you could have become a classic horror film.

I fucking loathe that movie for starting with so much potential and falling on its face so unbelievably hard.

Silent Hill would have been amazing if they had just cut out the first ten minutes, and started with them going to Silent Hill.

Then again, I like Street Fighter, so my opinions're nothing if not unusual.

My favorite game movie is Resident Evil, by far. Original story = win. (Which is why Apocalypse was so much worse. "Let's copy the game's story this time!")

Ya it was amazing to see in theatres as a kid. I was like omg no way super mario 3!!! Of course I remembered all the secrets they did and put them to good use a month or two later when super mario 3 actually came out. That movie blew me away as a kid.

P.S. Theres no way someone would just randomly decide to crouch only on a white box, that makes absolutely no sense!

All I really remember of the Mario Bros movie was thinking, "Why the hell are they fighting Dennis Hopper with Super Scopes?" And I was 9 at the time...

The first Mortal Kombat movie is pretty good as far as near-plotless kung fu flicks go. Raul Julia must be the laughing stock of the Actor Afterlife, that Street Fighter atrocity was his last movie before he died, poor bastard.

The first MK was video game movie gold. The first Resident Evil movie wasn't "bad" either compared to how shitty just about every other video game themed movie has been.

Still stuck on Street Fighter though.... I mean come on, Guile was not even American...he was French.

    I endured the whole film.

When the only good part of the movie is someone like Mike Epps' lines, you know there's issues.

And yeah, Raul Julia deserved a better final film. But he was awesome as Bison, like the film or not.

I've always been of the opinion that a Resident Evil that stuck much closer to the original game could have been classic.

No, not more macho Aliens ripoff shit. A slowly paced horror mystery taking place between a small group of frequently isolated individuals in a horribly oppressive environment. Plus, fucking monsters and zombies.

last i heard, he is doing SH2. My suggestion for the plot, Sean Bean goes to Silent Hill in search of Rose, and we learn about his dark and brooding past. I think it would work, and possibly pull back some fans (i enjoyed the first, to be honest, although i can recognise its flaws).

Also, the Halo film has to be made, as far as i'm concerned. After seeing Blomkamp's work, i was giddy with anticipation to see how it'd look under his direction, with some WETA goodness.

It would be all kinds of messed up if they try to say he did to Rose what James did to Mary in SH2.

And this time, they need to let Yamaoka do the music. The only reason #1's music was so good was because half of it was his.
