I played partway through Planescape Torment a while ago, and now I'd like to go back and finish it. I'll be starting from scratch since I don't still have my saves. I think I read somewhere that it was best to max your wisdom, so you would get all of the story, and not have to fight as much. Is this correct? What about intelligence? Mainly I want to play through it to experience the story, any advice on how to best do this?
I just got around to this game a few months ago (what can I say, I'm very slow sometimes) and frankly it's the best written thing that I've ever installed on my PC. I'm stuck in
Baator, after talking to the Pillar of Skulls, where I'm apparently supposed to find part of it (obsidian) and swallow it or something to escape, but I don't know where to look.
which has gotten really annoying and I haven't touched the game in quite a few weeks. But some day I'll just tough it out and get back in. So much fun.

Regarding leaving,
the portal is in the south western edge of the map. You simply need to approach it, and a dialog option will open automatically for you to pick up a stone nearby to bite down on.
While the combat does kind of suck in Torment, Mage isn't necessarily the only satisfying route. I for one took great pleasure in taking down loads of baddies with my big ol' axe without breaking a sweat.
Holy gosh, I was |_| close to not being able to finish the final (or second to final, depending on how you play it) fight due to being too weak and having too low wisdom or int or something.
Turns out I had to go kill a single shadow and make a run for it back through a portal, because I only needed < 10,000 experience to gain that last level for that last point.
I would have been SO mad, especially because Torment has what is, by far, my favourite ending to many game ever.
I've always played a mage, but would 9 times out of 10 just end up using a dagger for melee and ignoring damage spells entirely. Most battles aren't really worth the extra effort.

This is what I did until I decided to just be a fighter with really crappy fighting stats. The combat system's not much fun, but the magic system is even worse. D&D has the worst magic system ever as far as CRPG conversions are concerned, in my opinion (although I'm not familiar with the newer edition(s)).
Even if you intend to play as a fighter (which i did first time round) you should be pumping every available point into wisdom. It's often the case that a [wisdom]dialogue will yield a better result than an [Intelligence] one and there really aren't that many cases where you'll need intelligence or charisma before the point where you can get as good as infinite experience and a level every minute. The points that do exist don't give a great deal of satisfaction. Make sure that you have 13 dex from the start - it's not that big of a sacrifice and nets you a few good results as well as some AC.
Playing as a LG character nets you some very substancial results, playing as any other alignment gets you nothing in comparison. Telling the truth is a good thing.
I play mage purely for the awesome spell effects. It's surprising how well some of the animation holds up today. sure it's low res, but the 2D artwork is very stylish.

I always play a fighter with high WIS. And just beat the crap put of eveything.
Man, this game was awesome, but I lost my save half-way through it and never felt like putting in the effort of getting back to where I was. Someday...

talk to everyone. Long responses are usually better than short ones.
If you ever are given an option to mutilate yourself in a dialogue, like biting off your finger or ripping out your eyeball, do it.
Talk to the people in your party.
Don't be afraid to die. Dying doesn't hurt much.
Join every faction you can. Usually by the time you meet a new faction, you're done with the one you're already in.
And play a Mage. Combat is crappy in PS:T, so you might as well pick the class that has the neat looking spells.
Use the fixpack from Planescape-torment.org
Keep the questions comin', though.

And yet... so confusing. You could backstab people hard enough for them to explode.
With a dagger.
What the fuck are the physics going on there?
Your dagger was obviously a portal key and their spleen the portal.
That's right, you just opened a portal to the elemental plane of asskicking.
How would they NOT explode?
My favorite new discovery was the wizards who accidentally summon the rabbit from the Cave of Caerbannog. Fatal hilarity ensues.
Torment: Awesome writing. Boring, tedious-as-hell gameplay.
ive gotta do something about that.

Fighters deal incredible amounts of damage.
