it's not like these guys are going to disappear after this, and I'm not sure what outcome results in them disbanding
the way some of these guys talk, it's like they're in the trenches together
It feels bigger than gaming tbh
I mean it was never about games at all, it's a culture war that is largely being caught by people too young or stupid to understand that. But breitbart and all the other right wing populists realized pretty quickly and I think their influence is troubling.
I feel like anti feminism and "anti political correctness" is growing right now all over and I can't tell if it's temporary fit or a long term trend
It's difficult to tell now but there's been a real growth, I think, in the visibility of women's issues again over the last few years and there's been blowback against that. Like gamergate.
I think mostly though this is like turning over a rock and finding a ton of bugs more then a real infestation. It's been an area full of young men hanging out in an isolated bubble for decades now. As it's becoming more mainstream it's being pulled into the light and suddenly there's alot of these guys reacting to having someone actually judge their behaviour not by their own standards.
It seems to me the worry is less that it'll spread and more that this will end up being fertile ground for the political right and these doofuses will end up sucked into the right-wing media bubble based on anti-feminist anger.
I think there has been a massive surge in visibility for feminism in the last few years. We went from "PC" being a derogatory term used to mean someone was an outrage machine to pretty broad acceptance of the idea that people need to be sensitive to and respectful of the feelings of minorities other than racial minorities. That is a really big deal. The fact that "that's so gay" is not an acceptable thing to say anymore is a great example of a general cultural shift in feminism's favor. I think that the kind of person who sneered down their nose at PC language a few years back is terrified of the direction society is going in and this is just a small piece of the blow back.
hmm. Not sure about that. I think this may be more a product of a shift in your social circle.
I won a tiny travel toothbrush at the party yesterday - my team won the "fetching game" - which was damn convenient since ive been living like i haven't got a home this weekend.
I mean you can also do that for almost every 10-year span for the last 100 years.
There is nothing new. This is the same 'but now it's too far' that we get literally continuously.
I think it is different this time. Is there a group left that it's socially acceptable to insult in public anymore? I think that intersectionality has won.
Old people, poor people, mentally ill... any group without strong institutional presence or that aren't engaged in discourse as such.

Those are all different though. Everyone will one say be old. It hang really a minority. Being poor is not an inherent characteristic of a person or an immutable state. I'm not sure that I agree that you can just publicly make fun if the mentally ill.
I'd be willing to argue that for the vast majority of Americans being poor actually is an immutable state.

Edit:A lot of those are still kinda... Ehh..
So we can only make fun of people based on their choices? Hey, that's probably good.
I wouldn't say we are actually there. I mean, maybe people don't get up on stage and make jokes about stuff, that much. But it is super common online, in person, between kids, hollered out car windows.

Does anyone else get malware warnings in Chrome when they try to look at the first page of the Homeworld Remastered thread in G&T?
I am on my phone so can't really check. Report the OP and explain the situation in the report box ando one of the G&T mods should be able to figure out where the issue is

Old people are still a minority in terms of cultural representation. Poorness can often be seen by others as part of someone's character, in the sense that it intermingles with their behaviour - they're poor because of the way they act and they act that way because they're poor.
Perhaps making fun of the mentally ill isn't so common, but I think that insensitivity may be prominent, or often the language used in description is dismissive or prone to othering. For example, it seems fairly common that people will refer to the mentally ill as crazy or some other such term with a degree of negative connotation.
So, it may not be so much that these groups are directly insulted in contemporary discourse, but it does appear to be the case that it's still at least somewhat acceptable to be insensitive, which could transition to insult.

Ehh... He phrased it as having 'won'.
I guess I'd phrase it as through a lot of hard work having made some progress, and hopefully it will stick around long enough to outlast regression and backlashes.
Mostly I am just edgy cause I can't buy people stuff yet.

Innovations in chicken have finally failed the Chicken House. That's a Thai steamboat sublet metastatising, right there.

I mean look at Obama, he went from runnin as fast as possible from the gay marriage question to backing full equality in less than four years.
That's a big fucking deal, as Joltin Joe would say.
It's pretty cool.

Well yeah, who plays XBox with a friend in person anymore?
Another "wow this has aged badly" moment I had was the big reveal in Ace Ventura.
Its last panel is wonderful in how it illustrates the sheer WHAM that comes from such a development.

I remain unsure about the specific acquiescence to the notion of political correctness
homosexuality did give up something on the road toward the mainstream, namely its countercultural association
I...do they not have pinball in the UK?
Only for the Queen.
A hellish pinball-less wasteland
I am also delighted that a website like Pinformer exists.
