Since there seem to be a fair number of people posting here from outside the English-speaking world, I was curious: what sort of TV series in languages other than English can you recommend?
Living in Switzerland, I'm lucky in that we tend to get all manner of series in addition to American and UK ones, at least from Europe. I haven't seen
Les Revenants (
The Returned) yet, a French series about the dead returning, but I've heard very good things about it. I've also been watching and enjoying
Real Humans, a Swedish sci-fi drama/satire about a near-future world where humanoid robots, hubots, are everywhere; the series works both as a satirical perspective on various themes such as racism, homophobia, exaggerated faith in as well as fear of technology, but it is also pretty neat as a drama and even thriller, though it suffers from uneven plotting and slips into clumsy allegory (e.g. when characters complain that those hubots come and take away our jobs and turn to right-wing parties). Finally, since Swedish crime stories have had some traction outside Sweden, I've always quite enjoyed
Beck for its cast of characters and the actors. As a crime series it's pretty generic in a Swedish way, but especially the two leads, Peter Haber (who was in the original Swedish
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Mikael Persbrandt (who's Beorn in the
Hobbit movies, but who was much more recognisable and very good in Susanne Bier's
In a Better World), are always fun to watch.
Anyway, these are just some I've seen, and I could imagine that they're available in the rest of the world. I'd be curious to hear what other series people can recommend, where people don't talk all English-like.
