The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I have never seen any point to vocational school just because it forces people to pay money for something they used to get in half the time and get paid for.
It's basically "everybody need to go to college so we will make up a college for people who don't need it"
EM please don't make fun of my dashing lancer-type character who always has a witty thing to say and an exciting way to die for the party and a special charm so attractive that everyone has to listen to me

Why so many people playing DA:I with controller? Its making me think the game must be terrible.
some people prefer controllers except for incredibly specific types of games? i think the game is great. i just generally use controllers except if i'll feel totally uncompetitive without one (rts, fps)

Used to. And frankly it's cool and all that the guy I don't know said you're up to snuff Imma pick the guy who went through a standardized course.
ok i just watched an homage video to the catcalling-in-nyc thing except it's a dude walking around dressed in a super flame-y way, vneck so tight you see a few inches of his midriff, dick hugging red pants, shopping bag held with wrist flopped over etc.
not only is the video that's trying to raise awareness in itself problematic (it describes the guy as being 'dressed like a homosexual'- the fuck?), but the video itself... dang

After playing Destiny and Halo so much lately I find myself wanting to make a ridiculous little Bungie-homage RPG. I have been thinking about this during the commute all week.
I do not really have any pretensions to being a great system designer so I have been musing over opposed d6 pools so that each round of combat has successes canceling each other out and the loser taking the remaining successes as hits every round. If everyone is assumed to be moving and firing and double jumping all the time I thought that might vaguely capture the feeling that mutually attacking is more much about forcing someone to take cover and preventing them from firing accurately rather than rolling for individual attacks/bullets/etc.
Console shooter armaments are all about solutions to enemies at different ranges so I was thinking about FATE-Esque loose zones with attacks having more or less dice at each step of ranges (a shotgun rolls 3 dice at 1 range and a rifle rolls 1 at 2 range and 2 at 3 range or some such). I thought I was super smart for that for about 20 seconds and then realized I was unconsciously quoting 3:16.
Hmm. I should work on this, though.
I want to play or DM a goofy space opera game. And 3:16 and Lasers & Feelings and
I played some new-ish star wars system not too long ago and I really liked the general dice system although it was lame that they used funky dice.
Gist is that there are a successes, failures, advantages, and threats -- failure/success cancel each other and advantage/threat cancel each other. You end up with a roll that indicates whether you succeed or fail and the advantages/threats can be used thematically. So like getting a bunch of successes and threat might mean you do damage but your gun jams. Or if you're picking a lock and you are successful but get threat you might make a bunch of noise and alert a guard. So there are a bunch of dice with different numbers of success/failure/threat/advantage on them and you modify the dice pool to change difficulty.
Oh yeah that's FFG's new one. I bought the like "intro" box but not any of the full rule books. I think it actually looks pretty cool and I like the success-but bad or failure-but good possibilities.
Although if I ran a sta wars game the temptation to do Rogue Squadron / Black Squadron via the Warbirds rules would be overwhelming

The big thing about playing monstrous races like Drow is that they were also supposed to come with a heavy RP penalty. But it takes a not lazy GM for that to actually work. You want to play good Drow Drazzent Dorken? Welp be ready to be completely mistrusted an possibly jumped. But thats tough on a GM, so some ignore it and others try to do a bit of RP with it. But in most cases they really shouldn't be PCs.
The problem with this is that it makes every session and every encounter about the goddamn weirdo character. They suck the attention onto themselves and it's boring for everyone else.
I feel like I need to apologize in retrospect to my old tabletop group for the time I rolled a Psyker in Dark Heresy and would not stop shitting things up. Fun as hell for me, probably not fun for anyone else.
dont even front Cambiata
you regret nothing
Libel and slander! I'll see you in nerd court.
Srsly though rolling a 1 so that a warp daemon came to posess me and then winning the nigh-impossible roll to keep from getting posessed was amazing.

It just plays better with a Controller.
It's just the way it was designed. It's fine, they didn't compromise anything. It was just created with a controller in mind and it plays best with one. Playing with a mouse and keyboard feels cumbersome. The UI is big and all the click targets are big and the selections are based around wheels rather than scrollable lists.

"Some people just aren't college material" is a sentiment I always thought was stuck-up and ignorant, but, now, teaching, every now and then I run into a kid, where, well
I'd like it if the world could just be OK that some people are not college material, that we'd have alternative paths open for those people.
Like I've wondered as an adult why apprenticeship no longer seems to be a thing, except in very specific areas (like maybe Italian glass blowers do aprenticeships instead of univerity? but even there I'm not sure). Because for some people, being an aprentice would probably work way better than college.
Or maybe I'm talking out of my ass.
Huh, that's very different from here. You choose your type of high school, either it's "Study preparatory" ie you get what you need to be able to take higher education, or it's a vocational line where you learn what you need to become, say, an electrician
and all of the vocational lines have apprenticeships in the final years before getting your (what the internet tells me translates to) advanced craft sertificate

Standardized to what tho?
You don't come out of trade school a mechanic or welder or whatever. You come out a guy who has the equivalent of maybe 6 months doing a job.
And it's great for employers, don't get me wrong. They get to not pay for training and lock their worker into a company with a non transferable degree in baloney.
Sometimes it's more relaxing to sit back and play a PC game with a controller in my hand.
For example, I much prefer playing Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel on PC with a controller, same with the new Call of Duty's campaign mode. But if it's anything serious, like Call of Duty's multiplayer, that's KBAM all the way.
Plus, I've discovered how enjoyable it is playing a MMO like Tera with a controller. The answer is very.
I hope the part in the game where that comes up lives up to it.
I tell you what my friend

I'm 19hrs in, have barely scratched the plot, and have already encountered some stuff that warrants that shit

Yes. Right this second I am in Texas.
Tomorrow I fly back to PA and then return on 1/20/15
I love scatter dice.
I'm playing with KBAM, and so is belasco, and we're not struggling.
I can see where control sticks might be useful or my 2h melee guy but I'm using plenty of tactical combat view so it's not even an issue.
Bel's shooty elf is perfectly controllable with KBAM
