It is with deep sadness that I report the news that Mike Nichols has passed on last night in the company of his family. Nichols was one of the rare "EGOT" club, winning awards at the Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys. His filmography has more cinema classics than you would expect from ten directors, and he was renowned in his early career for his stand-up comedy act with Elaine May (a successful playwright herself) and the founding of The Second City in Chicago, the legendary improv comedy incubator that turned out an extraordinary amount of talent, from Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, John Belushi, and John Candy, up to Tina Fey, Steve Carrell, and Stephen Colbert.
He won his first Oscar for
The Graduate with Dustin Hoffman, and would go on to work steadily on critically-acclaimed projects, winning several more awards along the way. His last film was 2007's
Charlie Wilson's War, scripted by Aaron Sorkin, and was also nominated for an Academy Award. He is survived by his three children and four grandchildren, and his wife of 26 years, ABC Television's Dianne Sawyer.

This is one of those years.
