Yep, another guitar thread. I checked the previous ones, but they didn't provide much help. I have never played an instrument in my life, but after obsessing so much over Guitar Hero, I have decided I want to try to learn to play the guitar. Yes, I'm aware that a real guitar is really nothing like GH, but I think I would enjoy it for a hobby. I'm not looking to start a band or become a rock star, but learnign to play some kick ass metal songs would be awesome.
So any beginning guitars people recommend? Can I jump into an electric one, or is it easier if I buy an acoustic first? What's a good price point?
It's easiest to begin on a cheap acoustic. I wouldn't spend more than $150 or so since you're just beginning. You can get one for even cheaper than that -- go to a store that sells them (in my experience you're better off in a local shop as opposed to a large, national chain) and tell them you're just starting out, and that you want to pick up something cheap to learn on. You really don't want to spend a lot of money here because you might discover that you think playing the guitar sucks, and you'd rather just play Guitar Hero.
Ever heard of the Foo Fighters? 90% of their music is made on an acoustic guitar. They just rock it up with electrics and drums. Anyway, an acoustic is a lot of fun, I'd recommend nothing over 200$. An electric would just mess with your mind and your pocket.
Starting with an acoustic is much more wise in the short term and the long term. In the short term, you can play versions of songs solo that are acoustic originally (or not as the case may be) and in the long term, you'll get stronger fingers so that if and when you eventually learn electric it'll be a dream to play.
The absolute best way to get familiar with guitar (in my opinion) is to start playing on a classical.
They have nylon strings, so you can finger pick like on a bass, or use a proper pick. Whatever you feel comfortable with.
Also, the neck of the guitar is WAY wider, so you can get comfortable with chording a lot quicker than trying to learn on an acoustic.
Classical guitars are also much smaller, and easier to handle when playing than on an acoustic, so if you are a little person (like me) then it will feel way better.
If you're looking to play some metal, I would suggest an Epiphone Special II Les Paul. That was my first guitar. It'll run you about $150 bucks, but it has amazing tone for a $150 guitar.

one of the only songs I can play is an acoustic version of Everlong. Believe me, it's enough. Because well....it's Everlong
