Obscure and Unloved Games Appreciation Station

While you guys and gals are playing your newfangled Destinies you just got for Christmas, millions of games go by unloved because not enough people know of them and of how awesome they are.

So let's Fix that, PA Forums. Let's appreciate the shit out of those games, be they obscure indie games or even misunderstood AAA titles.

i want to start off by talking about a game I just really really love called Starseed Pilgrim.

it's an indie game you can buy on Steam about discovery. The less you know about it, the better it is. it's simply amazing and everyone should try it out and be judged solely on their opinions on this game.

So if you have 6 bucks handy, check out Starseed pilgrim on Steam. it's worth every penny and then some, in my humble opinion.

But enough about my opinions, what are your favorite obscure games? What are some games you feel deserve a second chance? What are those weird extremely japanese titles you fancy because of how quirky they are?

My favorite obscure game no one else has played? Impossible Creatures. It was an RTS wher the idea was you mixed two animals into one super unit. Rhino hornets ... flamingo scorpions ... the game's ending hinted at a sequel but I don't think Relic made another.

Din's Curse. It's the Diablo-clone with poor graphics, but it has a wealth of gameplay and awesome ideas. You can either pick a class with three trees, or mix and match any two trees from any class to create your custom class. You don't just go down into the dungeon, either... sometimes the dungeons send minions to the surface to fight the town! The game has a huge amount of procedurally generated content, and a lot of neat things like cave-ins and being able to fall through holes to deeper levels of the dungeons and monster rebellions (where an overlord is overthrown by other monsters!) and the like. So much fun.

    RPS likes it, too!

oh snap, i remember about that game.

I think a friend had it and I tried it and i just spent hours making creatures and not actually RTSing.

I played the hell out of Conquests of the Longbow when I was a kid. 11 floppy disks to install. It never seems to get brought up in the discussions about Sierra adventure games, but man, I loved it. Robin Hood and evil monks and crazy forest magic. Except we didn't have the book that had necessary answers to the puzzles. So we'd just have save, guess, reload all the time.

I finally beat it for the first time like 2 years ago.

For some reason, I dug the absolute hell out of Cold Winter; a PS2 FPS that was super gory in the Soldier of Fortune style, but steeped in British-Spy-MI6 -Disavowed-James-Bond atmosphere.

I remember playing the heck out of Amazing Island for the gamecube. Not a great game, but the draw your own monster gimmick was compelling enough to justify playing through a metric ton of mostly-bad minigames. I was just glad I had a controller with a turbo button for the button mashing games.

I loved the shit out of Die by the Sword. It was a mid 90's action/adventure where the gimmick was that you could control your sword arm with the numpad. So hitting 4 moved your arm left, then 6 moved it right, etc.

I was running around the start when I ran into the second enemy in the game, a kobold. I had kind of gotten the grasp of the basics in the first fight, but I also noticed that jumping forward made your character do a kind of jumping side flip. So I pondered if it would let me do something...

    Kobold: "Human! Die!"

Run forward and jump, hitting 4 then 6: The character does a jumping side flip, slicing the kobold's head off on the way down.

Instantly sold. There was even a move creator where you could make a custom move, then bind it to a key.

Exactly. I know I had it for NES but it might have been on both systems.

World in Conflict. Perhaps not that obscure, but a damned fine strategy game with possibly the best online system I've seen to date. A pity the studio is (basically) gone now. Also had quite fun trailers.

Oni was underappreciated in its day but I don't know if it can be appreciated now what with all the Bayonettas and Sleeping Dogs released since then.

I started a video series aimed at reviewing obscure games and i intend to cover this next game once i get a capture device.

i'm talking about true GameCube Hidden Gem: Gotcha Force.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRt3rOKI27w

Made by Capcom, this action game was insanely cool.

Imagine Pokemon, except as an action game...

Can you imagine doing 4 player free-for all battles in pokemon as an action game?

Well, Gotcha Force was kinda like that, except even cooler.

If you ever see this game in the wild, buy it. it's rare, but it's super fun.

I saw a full LP once. I really wish there was an easy way to play it on modern machines, since it seemed pretty interesting.

Majesty was pretty fun. You would build guilds, recruit units, then set bounties on things to try to get the hero's to do stuff. Like kill monsters.

Kind of gave it a different twist from most games. More of a fantasy kingdom simulation and management game.

and I wonder about my neighbors even though I don't have them
but they're listening to every word I say

Oni didn't live up to all the promises they made, but it was great.

Does anyone remember Shogo:mobile armor division? The original FPS mech game.

Also Earthsiege, Dynamix/Sierra's take on Mechwarrior. I loved those gourad shaders!

Hybrid Heaven. Not just an obscure game - featuring such a diverse array of oddities as cloning, pile-driving pig mutants, laser guns and kicking robots in the shins until they die - but especially relevant to this thread because it's an obscure Christmas game.

The neatest thing about Hybrid Heaven's weird-as-fuck combat system was that your character's stance (and maybe build?) changed depending on what moves you used most frequently.

I remember playing a shmup on the SNES called Strike Gunner S.T.G. Every level, you had to select a special weapon from a dozen or so choices, but it could only be used for that level; so picking a super nuke bomb or shields or whatever early might be a disadvantage in later stages.

I only played it once with a friend, but I remember having a blast with it.

I'm gonna have to go with Cities in Motion (both 1 & 2). It's an amazing game that's kind of like a city building simulator, except all you build are public transit lines. Well, and you can build the odd street or tunnel too if you like, but if you don't, then they will be built automatically as the city grows organically. Anyway. It's really awesome to build a well-oiled public transit machine and watch the profits roll in! Kind of like lemmings, except without the deadly danger. You make machines, you watch them hum, and it fills you with a satisfying sense of pride!
