So when it comes to rooting for other teams (as opposed to the team in your city), how do you guys do that? I've always been fond of the City>Division>Conference idea, where you root for your city or closest team, then another team from your division (should the former lose), then conference, you get the idea.
I only ask because I have a buddy of mine who was gung-ho on on Facebook about the Redskins at the start of the season and would have sworn on the bible that RGIII was really gonna shine this year and that this was Washington's year. And then when they imploded, he jumped ship to the Panthers (who are actually in the city he lives in), and I'd really like to give him shit for 1. being wrong and 2. being a filthy bandwagoner.
Or do you guys just root for whoever as long as it's not the Giants or Cowboys?
I root for the Cubs and Bulls because I'm nearish Chicago and my dad raised me on Cubs baseball, the bastard. I root for the Broncos because my fifth grade teacher tried to make us all dress in green and yellow when the Packers were in the Super Bowl against New England, and the Broncos beat them when I was in sixth grade, when I was still around (her current fifth grade class had fully bought into the idea of sucking up by wearing all green and yellow, which made it more fun). And I root for the Avalanche because...they came to town to play an exhibition game and they were the team that won?
But the only team out of those four I have any real attachment to is the Cubs, so, who knows
I'm a fan of the Angels because they're the local team I grew up with and my uncle now works in the organization, and I'm a UCLA fan because my parents went there (and as an alumni of a UC school without a football team, I can root for them guilt-free).
Those are the only two teams I have any real emotional attachment to. I became a Chargers fan more out of spite to my friends who were Raiders/Broncos fans, and because their uniforms are the best.
I'm kind of University of Illinois fan because they're close and they aren't the University of Iowa. Also they made a run to the National Championship game right when I started watching college basketball and that team was incredibly fun to watch
being a fan of a team is such an insane concept when you dig down into it that it's best to just skim the surface of it anyways
I feel like it touches on the same psychological need for community as religion does for some people. Being in a stadium with 30K likeminded people gives me the same thrill I used to get singing hymns with the congregation as a child.

Shadowen's Hierarchy of Cheering
1. Local teams or teams closest to my hometown
2a. Underdogs
2b. Teams that aren't hot garbage (teams that are beyond anything but a miracle are not underdogs, they're dead dogs)
3. Teams in tournaments facing teams that eliminated other preferred teams (e.g., was rooting for the Lions, barely; now am cheering for the Packers against Dallas)
4. Teams that won major championships during my formative years
So when it comes to rooting for other teams (as opposed to the team in your city), how do you guys do that? I definitely think you're allowed to bandwagon a team when
A) The team you're switching to has only reached .500 a week into the playoffs
and
Your previous team is owned by a colossal asshole.
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
I was raised in Miami, so I'm a big fan of their 4 teams through thick and thin (Dolphins, Heat, Marlins, Panthers). I don't live in Miami anymore, but they'll always be my teams.
As far as a situation where those teams don't make it to the playoffs, my selection of a team to root for is almost entirely random. Like, this time in the NFL playoffs it's the Panthers, but it would have been any team from the NFC South that made it because of their under-.500 record. If they get eliminated, I'll choose some other random team based on whoever is left.
Well, other than the Patriots, because fuck the Patriots.
I'm kind of University of Illinois fan because they're close and they aren't the University of Iowa. Also they made a run to the National Championship game right when I started watching college basketball and that team was incredibly fun to watch
I only live about 20 minutes from the University of Iowa. I've never been a big college sports fan to begin with, but there is a good possibility that my boys will grow up Hawkeye fans.

As someone who's lived in NC for 15 years (8 of which was in Charlotte) I can tell you the transition from Washington to Panthers is easy and pretty much expected. Most of NC used to be in the Washington TV market before the Panthers came into being. He's just a little late to the party but I'm sure everyone in town will welcome him.

I'm a fan of all things New York because I grew up there. My Dad was from Brooklyn and he loved New York sports and instilled that in me.
Now, my Dad was also kind of racist so he hated basketball (which doesn't make any sense) so I never rooted for the Knicks. My best friend when I moved to Florida was a huge Sonics fan and University of Kentucky fan so I latched on to those teams since he got me into basketball when I was 10. Also, the Knicks were thought of as thugs back then with John Starks and company so I grew to hate them.
That's why I love the Yankees, Giants, Rangers, Thunder, and Wildcats
Like the Jets, Bills, and Mets
And
Hate the knicks.
I also hate the Islanders but I don't have a reason for that. I just do.
I'm a Panthers fan because, practically speaking, I've lived in NC all my life.
I like the Packers because I think Aaron Rodgers is a pretty classy dude, and I love cheering on the Texans because those poor bastards deserve better.
Born and raised in Dallas so I was indoctrinated from a young age to be 1) Southern Baptist and 2) a Cowboys fan. I managed to grow out of the Southern Baptist thing, but I'm afraid the Cowboys fandom has only grown with time. I follow and root for the other Dallas big 4 franchises but none of them get me emotionally invested like the Cowboys do.
So when it comes to rooting for other teams (as opposed to the team in your city), how do you guys do that? First, I pretty much always root against other teams in the same division as my team.
unless for some reason one of those teams winning helps my team, like needing a team to lose to get a wild card or something.
after that, i don't really root for a specific team.
i just look at whose playing who and root for a team based on the match up.
I grew up in South Florida, so my favorite teams were all from there. Panthers and Dolphins are still my teams in their respective sports, but I moved to the DC area right as the Florida Marlins were becoming the Miami Marlins and building that god awful stadium in an awful location where it never should've been built with taxpayer money gotten from a completely corrupt mayor and their piece of shit asshole owner and that was pretty much the last straw for me, so Go Nats!
I'm kind of University of Illinois fan because they're close and they aren't the University of Iowa. Also they made a run to the National Championship game right when I started watching college basketball and that team was incredibly fun to watch

That said, I will never forget laying in bed in 1997 waaaaaaaaaaaaaay past my bed time, listening to the radio as Edgar Renteria hit Craig Counsell in for the win, or in 2003 when I was living in an apartment now in college with 2 Yankees fans and another Marlins fan and the two of us jumping up and down as the other two just stood there completely dejected.
though the end to the stanley cup finals a couple years ago when the blackhawks scored twice in like, twenty seconds at the end to win was pretty close
I half assed root for every Texas team in college ball (except for UT because it's funny when they lose and tech because fuck the entire city of Lubbock), but my true allegiance is Team Chaos. Literally nothing makes me happier than watching everything collapse and suddenly Midwestern Idaho Technical College is in the top 5 or whatever.
I'm a Cowboys fan. I rooted for the Oilers when they were still around. My hometown team is the Spurs, and that's pretty awesome. Unfortunately committed to the Astros when I give a shit about baseball for a few weeks and then devolve into watching college baseball.
College teams, I was raised a UT fan. This works out pretty well, because my fiancee's alma mater is UT. So she and I get along pretty well. We met while she was doing her grad work at my alma mater, so we both pretty much root for the same teams. I converted her from a dirty filthy disgusting Mavs fan to a Spurs fan in 2013. Sadly, she still cheers for the Rangers.
And my mom still insists on telling me all about the Texans games, because she watches those. In addition to the Cowboys. So it's actually kind of fun listening to her warped version of events, compared to me, the impartial observer of Texans games that I'll catch because I have nothing else to do. Thing is, the Texans have a likeable team. I just don't have any reason to be heartbroke and dejected with two football teams like it's been for most of my life.

Ravens, Orioles, Caps, Bullets fan, occasional nats fan. Local teams I grew up with, or am near and have attended games. My college team is Villanova, where I went. Though my love for my teams is almost trumped by my hatred of specific teams and their obnoxious fans: namely steelers, Cowboys, Eagles, pats, yankees, Red Sox, Celtics, flyers, duke. They can all suck a butt
I'm going to spoiler this for those who haven't read the newest Breaking Madden:
This is at least the second time he's locked the game up due to something so simple as the game not being able to count high enough. I wonder if someone at EA could see this and either patch it or change it for a later version. Or not, 'cause why would EA make that kind of effort.

I root for the white sox and Blackhawks because of living in Illinois. I root for the Chiefs due to living a few years in Missouri. The chisox choice came from living in a family full of Cubs and cardinals fans I wanted to be different.

1) do they play college football? if yes, yes, if no, eh
I don't know where to go from here
I might not rank them in order but I will cheer for them all
Or consequently the shame might also be strong to the point of having to make reparations or something.

2) The AFC team in an AFC/NFC game, as it helps the Packers make the playoffs
3) The team with the worse record in an NFC/NFC game, as it helps the Packers make the playoffs
