[Camp Comic] Friday, January 9, 2015 - Trial and Error
Dang it, Katie. Intense back-story AND a really hard-to-find hidden kitty. In all seriousness, though, nice work. These have been a real joy to follow. Well, figuratively speaking. It's kinda dark at the moment.
What're these secret kittens everyone's talking about? I've never seen any in the comics. Are they found just by looking closely, or is there some gimmick?
@Kingault Every comic since the one where a shipment of feral cats arrives (linked below) has included a cat somewhere in it. Often they are hidden in the background in the trees or bushes. http://campcomic.com/comic/26
Also, I'm starting to understand why Malachi is such a dick, his mum is REALLY mean and by the sound of it, his dad is either gone or dead and he's trying to live up to his memory.
Aww. Reminds me of me and my best friend growing up, when we'd do all sorts of poorly-considered science experiments with household chemicals. It's a wonder we never managed to poison ourselves.
Maybe I'm just heartless, but the only thing in this comic that brings me close to being appalled is mom saying "And you're not." It seems like a particularly rough blow.
HOWEVER, the rest of the comic implies that this sort of thing has happened many times, and even this one incident shows that he nearly lost an eye (cracked goggles) and nearly burned the house down, so maybe it's something he needed to hear.
Of course, I suppose I also have to consider that he eventually got abandoned at camp. If that was mom's doing as well, then I wouldn't rush to her defense on that one. But as far as the little snippet from the past that is shown in this comic, I do cut her some slack.
"It's just as I've always said. We are being digested by an amoral universe."
Is there a worse curse than being the son of a genius and not having talent? to know that no matter how hard you try you will never be as bright as your progenitor?
I guess this explains why his mother/parents had such high expectations for his grades. I just thought they/she were/was one of those helicopter parents or something (grammar is so hard when there is uncertainty. Let's get a bit more backstory soon, Katie!).

Nice touch: the scorch marks are still masked by the safety glasses after they're removed. Insanely good detail.
(by the way the writing and drawing are great. You two make a great team... and "boned" made me lol my pants.)

"Dad would do."
It looks like he was completing it himself adding things his mother never said.
