Wow.... and I mean... just.... WOW MOM. I can't handle all these tragic back stories. Imagine what we'll get when we delve into Brian's.

Set in that wood I feel like this should have been called 'Trial and Terror'. :P

Ahhh man. Thought His dad made meth for a bit there...

Dang it, Katie. Intense back-story AND a really hard-to-find hidden kitty. In all seriousness, though, nice work. These have been a real joy to follow. Well, figuratively speaking. It's kinda dark at the moment.

What're these secret kittens everyone's talking about? I've never seen any in the comics. Are they found just by looking closely, or is there some gimmick?

  • DromesiusDromesius Registered User new member
Hmm from the way she talks she's most likely his mother. On the other hand, she could be an older sister.

@Kingault Every comic since the one where a shipment of feral cats arrives (linked below) has included a cat somewhere in it. Often they are hidden in the background in the trees or bushes.

He didn't even take any Elephant Candy!! BTW, what happened to all that stuff?? :)

  • Talyn RahlTalyn Rahl Registered User regular
Wow That was a Hardcore kitty...

Also, I'm starting to understand why Malachi is such a dick, his mum is REALLY mean and by the sound of it, his dad is either gone or dead and he's trying to live up to his memory.

    Bring on some MAD SCIENCE!

@Dromesius An older sister wouldn't say "your dad was a genius" unless she was like a step-sister or something.

first panel, bottom left, light ink

Nice touch: the scorch marks are still masked by the safety glasses after they're removed. Insanely good detail.

are we taking bets on whether Malachi's dad died in a science experiment?

  • ThalliumThallium Registered User new member
I made an account just to say thanks for making him wear Safety goggles. It's a daily struggle in high school chemistry class.

Aww. Reminds me of me and my best friend growing up, when we'd do all sorts of poorly-considered science experiments with household chemicals. It's a wonder we never managed to poison ourselves.

Poor Malachi, the boy just wanted to live up to his father's apparent genius. Wonder if we'll find out anything else.

Luckily I had the foresight to put on my feelings goggles at panel 2. Knew that couldn't be going anywhere good.

Maybe Malchi's no genius, but (@Thallium), he ain't dumb. Yay for safety goggles! (Sorry, curtains.)

  • MarcinMNMarcinMN Registered User regular
Maybe I'm just heartless, but the only thing in this comic that brings me close to being appalled is mom saying "And you're not." It seems like a particularly rough blow.

HOWEVER, the rest of the comic implies that this sort of thing has happened many times, and even this one incident shows that he nearly lost an eye (cracked goggles) and nearly burned the house down, so maybe it's something he needed to hear.

Of course, I suppose I also have to consider that he eventually got abandoned at camp. If that was mom's doing as well, then I wouldn't rush to her defense on that one. But as far as the little snippet from the past that is shown in this comic, I do cut her some slack.

"It's just as I've always said. We are being digested by an amoral universe."

Is there a worse curse than being the son of a genius and not having talent? to know that no matter how hard you try you will never be as bright as your progenitor?

    "Dad would do."
It looks like he was completing it himself adding things his mother never said.

I guess this explains why his mother/parents had such high expectations for his grades. I just thought they/she were/was one of those helicopter parents or something (grammar is so hard when there is uncertainty. Let's get a bit more backstory soon, Katie!).
