I don't understand the distinction being drawn between "killed in action" vs "died in the line of duty." From my reading, that is what we're voting on; the property tax exemption I guess already made it into the constitution back in 2020?

IMO it's reasonable for the government to give a break to the spouses of military who died in one of our forever wars. I'd rather that be in regular law/tax code, rather than the constitution, but I don't think that's what we're voting on this time.

To be killed in action requires you to actually be in action at the time.

“Died in the line of duty” could be a training accident.

Yeah, that was my guess, but it also goes to highlight why the original amendment was so fucking stupid. If it was just a normal law, the state legislature could just pass a law that amended the existing setup, but instead they had to pass this as a proposed amendment in two consecutive legislatures and then put to a vote in a general election.

If I were that spouse I'm not sure the distinction would make much of a difference.

Its a paperwork thing which of course the spouses doesn't care about but the state sure does.

    Hey folks!

If you haven't early voted/gotten you ballot double check your registration! Youngkin is purging rolls and most of those are legal voters who missed a check box.

Thanks for this reminder. It appears that I have been purged!

Also, remember, that in Virginia we have same-day registration!

So, even if you do somehow get purged from the rolls, you can show up day-of with an acceptable form of ID*, fill out the form, and cast a same-day-registration provisional ballot.

    * Make sure you check the list of acceptable ID documents: https://www.pwcvotes.org/_files/ugd/d8ec42_58f57dbf1267410ab60cf49ef6ecc2fa.pdf

It’s just so ugly and infuriating and the banality of evil.

Non citizens will be prosecuted if they vote. Yeah no shit, that was always the case.

And voter roll purging is just such scum sucking shit

People really will sell their rights, freedoms and conveniences down the river if it means hurting the other guy

Yep! I went ahead and filled out the online registration form immediately yesterday, but if I don't hear back about it before election day, you better believe I'll be doing the same-day registration/provisional ballot thing

Just as a reminder, though, if you show up to the proper precinct (check your local Election Office's site to look up yours if you don't know it!), and you aren't on the pollbook for any reason at all, including "I just never got around to registering" or "Some fucking wannabe-Nazi purged me from the rolls,", you can cast a ballot through same-day registration. It makes us do extra paperwork (Boo!), but ensures you get to cast a ballot (Yay!) and get your sticker (Double Yay!).

Just 1) make absolutely certain you're at the right precinct, and 2) make sure you bring proper ID.

Note that it will be a provisional ballot (as all same-day registration ballots have been, since it was implemented), and you will get a piece of paper that talks about how the whole provisional process works. Read that paper.

If I got a mail-in ballot and sent it away weeks ago, I should be fine from this purge nonsense.... Right?

probably, regardless, the purge was 1600 people so just statistically it's not likely to be you

but it doesn't hurt to check you're still registered

    @Fry

Go to the Citizen Portal for the Virginia DOE: https://www.elections.virginia.gov/citizen-portal/

You should be able to see your absentee ballot status.

If anyone reading this, who is a VA resident, does find that they've been purged from the rolls by the fascist republicans, or if they know someone that had this happened to them. I'd strongly encourage voting early, if they can. That makes it easier to ensure you have as much time as possible to make sure these fuckers don't treat them up with some bureaucratic bullshit because the clock is ticking down and these fuckers will do everything they can to fuck people out of their vote.

I'd also suggest filing a formal complaint against the Youngkin administration with the DoJ. After all, if one was a US citizen, that could legally vote in this election and had their name purged from the rolls. That was an instance of the Youngkin administration violating their rights. Don't try to go "but it won't make a difference!" Take the time to do it because you never know, it's also provided irrefutable documentation that these purges did infringe upon people's voting rights and that will be handy ammunition for passing laws that are aimed at shutting this shit down. Don't let these fuckers have enough room to argue that people weren't that troubled by this bullshit or that the lack of complaints showed that they only purged those that weren't eligible to vote.

Also fuck Republican and the conservative majority on SCOTUS. There is no fucking excusing this shit, these fucking fascists are intentionally trying to rig the election.

Virginia doesn’t have any recent examples of extremely close races being determined by a game of rock/paper/scissors right
