Program to scan every computer part

Ok, I know I can open the computer up, but I don't want to until I'm installing shit into it.

What I want is a program that will scan my computer and tell me everything about it. Like what kind of harddrive I'm using, what kind of RAM, etc.

I want to put some extra ram, but I'm not sure how many slots I have left on the motherboard. Nor am I sure what kind of ram I have. Whether it's a single 1gb chip or 2 512's. DDR or DDR2. Brand, etc.

Does such a program exist?

There are actually many ways to do this. There's even one in Windows XP. Here's a whole list of freeware that will do the trick..

    I recommend Belarc Advisor. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

I've used the utility from driverguide.com a few times to try and fix stuff. Worked pretty well.

Just go to Crucial's site and click the "Scan my System" button. That will load an ActiveX control to determine what you've got. It can tell you what you have and how many slots free, etc. It will also list the type and what you can upgrade to.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

Ok, thanks a lot guys, it has helped. I might aswell ask here, maybe you guys can answer it.

Ok, it says I have 4 slots and 2 of them are taken up by 2 512's. They are DDR PC3200. It also says that each memory slot can hold DDR PC3200,DDR PC2700,DDR PC4000 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

Now I'm not sure what I want to do. I'm assuming the best course of action is to buy RAM that is DDR PC3200. But does it matter if it's the same "Brand" or is that irrelevant? None of the programs told me what the brand of RAM was.

Also, is it wise to buy a 1gb stick and put it in there just incase I want to buy another 1gb stick down the road, or is it better to buy 2 512's right now because performance will be better?

    Thanks a lot guys.

edit- Here is what I was thinking of buying. 2 of these. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=586829&Sku=ULT30215

Problem is that they are some ultra brand while there are some others like corsair. Is this relevant?
