    I have a question.

Now, 99% of my exposure to transpeople is on this forum and I've noticed that it is primarily people who were born with male genitalia but identify as female.

Is this commonplace? Does it tend to go this way more often or is just my exposure being limited to this place?

Hopefully more trans forumers wont be driven away by what happens in this thread. That would be nice.

I'm not sure of the numbers, but I've read that there are more trans men than women. Keep in mind that there's no good reason in people's minds to do a formal study and what studies are done are usually done by cis people who put a completely arbitrary definition on the words "transition" and "gender identity"

And then keep in mind that if you're AFAB people just don't listen to you anyway.

It's pretty hard to keep things positive if you start the thread out like this.

I read that as ABFAB, and nodded understandingly.

It's a valid concern, Tube. And it's gonna keep happening unless people start re-examining why.

    That's not helping things, Tube.

It is a legitimate concern after the way the last trans thread went.

  • MetalbourneMetalbourne Inside a cluster b personalityRegistered User regular
There's a reason I found that specific picture.

There aren't many of us left, we have our shields up and we're bristling. We're not willing to compromise or negotiate because we're proud or because we're stubborn, it's because we can't fucking compromise when it's about our own very right to exist.

I'm kinda pissed that I have to pull a scene from a white male power fantasy to make that point when the rest of us go through it every goddamn day.

I'm not going to tell anyone else how to post but I stay away from these threads because it seems like there's a super high chance that someone is going to say "here comes another cis white guy, telling us how it is" and I don't want to do that or be accused of it.

Someone, not me, needs to figure out whether these threads are for asking honest questions and having a dialogue or whether they're a clubhouse for the trans folks. Either is fine but it affects how people will interact with them.

So, with the first caveat that I will call a person whatever titles they want (in other words, I'll ask if for some reason I really need to know, though in general I don't see why the following would be any of my business) Also with the caveat that my description may not end up completely inclusive, but I'm aware people are all over the place on every scale and that's cool!

My partner and I were talking the other day about the words/titles you would use to describe the sexuality of a person who identifies as transgender based on what gender identity (is that even the right term?) they feel attracted to. I was arguing that if someone identifies as female, no matter what genitals they may have, if they are attracted to males I would call that heterosexual, and if attracted to females I'd call them homosexual. So you'd basically have cis or trans, then hetero/homo/bi/a sexual based on what the person identified as. Is that the preferred way of doing it at all? Hell I'm not even sure about using the term "identifies as". Or if I should be using "male/female" or something more vague and less tied with scientific words that indicate genitals, like "boy/girl"

Anyway, any help in what you prefer (if the above applies) or things to know in general would be great! I'm sure there is no hard and fast rule for everyone, but I could stand to learn what the sides are!

(Also thanks for running these threads)

You could just try not telling us how it is. That might work.

I don't think that's a dichotomy that needs to exist

    questions are good

    sometimes people ask insulting questions

we have a private line direct to Emby if you're worried it might be insulting

I just don't believe that it has to be between "appeal to cis folk" or "trans folk only, stay out!"

    that's gawbage

I like to use these threads as a chance to learn something about something I have zero exposure too. Living in Brainerd, MN means there are no transpeople around (that I know of) and I'd be afraid of what would happen to someone who is.

Hell, I wrote a short term paper on trans people and the increased rate of suicide amongst them last semester and I was forced to defend the idea of transpeople to the other students because they didn't understand it. They mostly had the same sad opinion a lot of people have which is that physical sex and gender are always matching. "Boys have a penis and girls have a vagina." That sort of thing.

I feel like this is an area where it could be really beneficial for some QUILTBAG folks to step in and explain, because I have no idea where to even begin with what went wrong and why, and what I can do in the future to help with it, prevent it, or be a better person.

The short answer is that a trans person got kicked out of the trans thread for complaining about what it's like to be trans.

    and then things got worse.

if you're gonna define someone else, stick to what gender they are

put the trans or cis part out of your head, it just complicates things if you're new to this stuff

yeah, most people don't understand that the Western gender binary isn't an immutable law

I'm a Steam Powered Giraffe fan, and one of the bots was Rabbit, whose performer transitioned to female (I think I'm using the correct verb, but apologies if I'm not) and originally was going to keep Rabbit male, but the past year Rabbit was fully upgraded to a more feminine appearance and renamed Bunny.

They've been doing retrospective videos for their band's anniversary and I feel like a jerk because for some reason it's easier for me to get used to Bunny's new voice than Isabella's (the performer). I don't know why that is, but I've been feeling bad about it and like I should confess.

Oh, wait! I just watched a newer videovideo (the quesadilla one) and maybe it was just how she was talking in the other bids. This one seems much more casual and...well I don't want to say natural but less...rehearsed?

Do some none-Western cultures have a different/don't have a gender binary?

A lot of cultures don't believe in the gender binary. Hell, some western cultures don't believe in it. Native Americans are totally a western culture. A lot of them have multiple genders aside from the two we assign to people. There are cultures all over the world that have genders other than just male and female.

I mean, no they didn't. I can guarantee that was not the reason that anyone got kicked out of a thread. Someone may have been kicked out for being abusive, or one of any number of reasons. It's grossly unfair to even suggest that we would kick someone out of a thread for saying "what it's like to be trans". If that's going to be the level that you're going to approach this conversation at, I'm going to stop having it.

I'm here when anyone wants to discuss things, but I'm not prepared to have myself or my staff slurred in the process.

In fact, I think that discussion from now on can happen in my inbox. This thread can go on and be its own thing, we're not talking about whatever happened in the last damn thread any more.

Nope, this doesn't sound like the systematic opression of trans people or anything:

"Well this is what I feel like happened"
"Shut up that's not how it is and nobody is allowed to talk about the incident anymore"

Lock it up, tube, we're done here.

that's the best thing about casting off the name that was assigned to you.

Getting to pick a cool one.

I've always felt that people should be proud of their name.

So if the one they were given at birth doesn't suit them, isn't something that works for them or their identity, then by all means find a new one that does.

So getting to pick a cool name sounds like the right solution to that, for sure.
