Time to coldly and mechanically make my pool list, because it's not like there's anything worth putting my heart into.

That nominee list is beyond weak.

But at least no Seth MacFarlane as host like those couple of years ago I guess.

There should be a rule that no one can pick American Sniper for best picture, because I don't want that sort of cynacism rewarded.

I'm going try to make my picks early this year without reading a lot of Oscar prediction articles. Not like it looks like an interesting race best picture wise, it's basically Boyhood in a landslide unless Birdman makes a late push, right?

i don't know what makes me angrier

    a) that lego movie wasn't nominated for best animated

    or

cool smiley) that there are rumors floating that it got DQ'd because of its live-action bits (which is the dumbest excuse)

    or

    c) knowing that even if it was nominated, it would lose because of the well documented fact voters largerly hate animation and don't watch any of the films (and presumably doubly so if it's based on a series of building toys)

Also hey I guess Nolan still doesn't get a directing nomination, sure, I guess that.

I hope he's having a drink with DiCaprio right now.

I think Nolan did fantastic work with Interstellar but I can't get mad at him being snubbed because I'm way more
mad about Ava Duvernay getting snubbed.

The Academy despises animated movies, nothing new here.

I'm looking forward more to the Golden Raspberries.

The Razzies people have also ripped Adam Sandler's shit wide open and tend to not let crappy movies slide so I'm willing to forgive a few mistakes here and there.

There are FAR crappier movies that they always ignore. They only nominate the stuff that's popular to hate, hence the constant appearance of Sandler and Transformers. I don't need the Razzies to tell me those are bad.

i don't know, i think because of the nature of the nominating committee, animated feature consistently has some of less-conventional nominating of any of the categories

for instance foreign-language animated films get nominated significantly more than do live-action foreign language films for best picture

though obviously there are problems with animated films not being able to get best picture traction, and the actual feature animation award usually just goes to the most popular choice because most of the voters in the main awards don't watch all the films

I didn't say nobody cared, but they will never win a Best Picture award. The separate Best Animated category isn't the same weight as that one.

additional insight into the dearth of selma
For the Oscars, most of the time, late-December releases just don’t work. The Selma campaign, faced with a movie that was not going to be ready until the last minute, made a set of decisions that were, I think, catastrophic. Chief among them, it opted to shrug off most of the guild awards and not send DVDs to their memberships (it wasn’t eligible for the WGA), missing many opportunities to build enthusiasm in the rank-and-file.

you had foxcatcher, whiplash, nightcrawler and gone girl and the latter two ultimately got largely shut out

I'm definitely checking out Birdman, both because i've wanted to see it and because it seems most positioned to contend with boyhood

and i will also see Grand Budapest and Whiplash at some point, gonna go see Selma this weekend

I've only seen Boyhood and Imitation Game so far, but will probably see Theory of Everything anyway because the wife would like to

if there were a way to somehow appreciate/understand bradley cooper's performance in american sniper without having to bother with the movie i would like that

How To Train Your Dragon had better win, but in the face of Big Hero 6? Enh.

But Dean DeBlois deserves the win. He's such a nice guy, created Lilo and Stitch, and is Canadian (gotta support).
