the real answer is that games journalism has always been terrible I mean seriously

    idk

PC Gamer US was terrific in the mid-90s, when dudes like Wiliam H. Trotter would write like three-page columns about obscure hardcore wargames with titles like "TACTICS POLSKA 1939" and you could only buy through mailorder from tiny companies with two employees

their reviews were really long and in depth and the staff writers all had columns where they talked about their pet genres (one guy was into FPSes and RPGs and FPSRPGs so was obviously my bro, there was the competitive multiplayer FPS guy, the sim guy, etc) and they would put games into historical context and talk about how this month's release was a pretty good shooter but you might want to check out this overlooked title from last year that did the same stuff a bit better

and I really liked PCGUK when guys like Gillen were writing for it although it was a completely different beast

but all this stuff still basically exists, it's just happening on blogs and youtube series and stuff rather than on big ad-splashy games sites and if someone believes those big ad-splashy games sites they have only themselves and their own poor upbringings to blame

Reminder that Charlie Brooker was a dedicated games journalist literally recently enough that I was reading his articles when I was a teenager.

I really love that Brooker is a games-literate media personality over there. We don't really have many people like that here in the US yet.

To be fair he's exceptional in that. I can't really think of any other decent examples off the top of my head (Dara O'briene and a few other comedy hosts I guess?). Though I've always gotten the impression that generally we are more accepting for tv personalities with an edge of being anoraks than the slickly produced american ones.

By fans? Absolutely, but that happens with nearly any fandom, regardless of nation of origin

By the official texts? I'd say yes, but in the same manner that nearly any franchise that is based around females-aimed-at-male-gaze is. Nothing explicit, but suggestive.

The Yamato (miss Yamato?) is stacked like pancakes.

The most popular Kancolle character, from the numbers of doujinshi, cosplay, and crossplay I witnessed at both Comikets last year, is Shimakaze, which is kind of grody? But it was amusing taking my girlfriend through the cosplay areas and going, "so there's a dude crossplaying as her, and there's another, and there's an all-male Sailor Scout troupe..."

we have laws about "a few words" and how you can go to jail for them if they're the wrong ones.

ask if he thinks he knows better than lawyers and judges and on what basis he presumes to think so. if he says something about video games laugh in his face.

honestly just skip to laughing in his face

Definitely our game shows and MTV videos and what not tend to be hosted by a series of forgettable empty suits. On the other hand, our late-night talk show and interview hosts, though, are almost all kind of nerdy, unconventional people - Johnny Carson was a magician, amateur astronomer, and zoologist, David Letterman is a science and history buff, Conan O'Brian and Colbert are explicitly self-confessed nerds, et cetera - but it's something that you get the sense that an army of makeup people and image consultants and producers and PR folk try very hard to keep a lid on, lest some imagined viewer get salty about the uppity intellectuals on his teevee.
