Traffic still isn't great. I use the 3 lane with emergency lane for all my industrial areas so there is a hope that the emergency vehicles can get where they are going. Plus usually 3 or 4 offramps that go underground and meet up to funnel traffic more effectively to the free ways, so it isn't a mess of surface street intersections.

Is the bolded a new thing? Don't recall a 3-lane + dedicated emergency.

It came included with After Dark I do believe. To be more precise its a 3 lane road with one of the lanes being dedicated emergency, not 3 lanes plus a dedicated emergency.

I've been seeing a few cool cities where the main boulevard is two big roads with rail in between. It looks very cool. I might have to do that for my next city. I'm thinking a sunken trench that carries the rail with tree lined edges, then it comes level whenever a station is required, then dives back down. The roads across will be bridges.

Man I'd be happy with 3 lane with one dedicated to emergency+non industrial.

I think next time I start a city I might try to just build lots of small isolated industrial districts instead of a few large ones.

Who's got 2 thumbs and loves boring flat maps with lots of grids?

I'm going for a superblock grid system. Each block is laid 2 squares apart to allow for road upgrades later on. I went with a 4x1 configuration and it's working out really well. I put comercial superblocks every 4 or so residential with commercial bordering everything. You should be able to walk or bike to the corner store to pick up milk and eggs. There is 1 metro station per superblock, stretching all the way up to the industrial area a the top of the map. Pretty much everyone should either be taking a bus or the metro to work. Most of the vehicles on the road are tourists and delivery trucks. Traffic has been a challenge but with some careful tweaking is totally under control. I'm using the Rush Hour mod for added realism. Got a few other mods for building and such. Most of the rest are asset packs I've found. There are a few I don't like so I will be removing them at some point.

I just can't do superdense. I'm a child of the Pacific Northwest. Give me hills and mountains and forests and rivers to break up my cities.

That said, while a big flat map isn't my preference, what you've done is fucking amazing. I feel like if you used a NYC map and some graphics mods you could make it look almost exactly the same.

Working on a map now based on Portland Oregon. Taking some liberties to make it more workable, but should be an interesting Pacific Northwest map. Lots of woods, some soft hills and mountains. trying to get the rivers to flow in the correct directions. Not quite sure how to make that work. The Columbia is like a tile wide by itself and trying to get that much water to flow is challenging. I'm thinking of dropping the sea level a bit and adding a ton of water sources to one edge.

I wish I could tell the map though that these water edges are where the water comes in, and where it exits.

New screenshots incoming! I've grown the city a bit and reworked the highway entrances and exits. Traffic is flowing quite nicely. Going to need to expand my public transit here soon. At 250k Cims, my rig is really starting to chug. Framerates be damned, I want it BIGGER.

Started a new map based on the Bend area of Oregon, on the edge of the map there are the three sisters mountain range. I think it'll be a really cool site for a city. I have to figure out the river though, it keeps generating ripples.

    Hey duders.

Just published my first map. Based on the Bend topological data. I've made a few changes, smoothed out a few things, but I think its a cool looking map. There is a great view of the Three Sisters mountain range that should make an awesome backdrop to any city!

Cool! I'll try it out tomorrow as I was planning to do some building for a bit.

@webguy20 Map does look cool, but on my starting spot I have no where to put a water pump or a sewage drain. I can live with water towers for a while, but man, that sewage is gross. :)

Can you build canals? I forget if that requires a certain population or not.

Building shit canals is a thing I have done.

Hahah thanks for this! I play with a mod that unlocks all the squares. I didn't even think about it! I'll reset the starting space.

I wonder if it's possible to have a lake and just dump all your sewage into that. I'm speaking in general gameplay terms. That would be hilarious, just a thick, brown mess. Maybe if it gets too dense it catches on fire.

Make a shit lake and then use it for hydro power.

    It's the circle of...something!

  • webguy20webguy20 I spend too much time on the Internet Registered User regular
Or you pump so much sewage into it, the shit lake starts to overflow and floods the surrounding areas, making a huge area sick.

Updated the map. Fixed the starting position and cleaned up the freeway train overpass a bit. Apparently I don't know how to upload an existing map so I deleted the old one and this one is the new link.

I built a hydro dam waaaay up near the start of the river and noticed some traffic floating through the air on the dry-side like they were on some invisible highway. No idea if that's a vanilla bug or what. I then looked around further down the "path" and found traffic going both ways through the sky over the large farming area near the starting point.

Very nice map, however. I like the density of the resource locations, and there are some great spots for dams. A lot of maps lack both those things.

  • webguy20webguy20 I spend too much time on the Internet Registered User regular
Fascinating! I'll poke and prod it a bit. I haven't had any traffic bugs when I tested it.

I've been playing a winter map and have decided that winter maps are depressing. I feel like no matter what my cities look like they all feel like Cleveland.

I mean, the game is HEAVILY modded, but everything is available in the steam workshop. You don't have to scour the Internet for them.

Also I'm sure there will be a steam sale sooner than later. It's already been on a couple. Also Afterdark is worth getting, but snowfall is pretty forgettable beyond some more transit options that are useful. It's probably worth getting them all for mod compatibility.

Best mod I've ever downloaded for CS is the no pipes required mod.

Because having to plop down a monotonous grid of pipes is the worst. If they worked like power they would be so much better.

So coming back after a while, is rush hour still up to date or has another traffic/demand mod eclipsed it?

Also does it play nice with the game day events build into the dlc stadiums?

Here's my newest. This is the main metropolitan area, but the map is going to be spread out small towns after I get this core area done. I feel like I'm halfway through right now.

I'm going to expand around the stadium and around the tree line behind the airport. I'm really pushing to make the city look as organic as possible outside of the central grid system, and then I'm going to go back through and do a lot of detail work with props.

I plan on doing the following:

Snipping up a lot of loose road ends and making them look like a larger network of roads outside the city, even having them connect to some of the smaller towns on the outside of the city proper.

Expand the suburban area of the main city out to be about twice the size of the inner city proper. Right now that means expansion towards the airport, lumber yards, prison, and out past the stadium... which is going to mean some serious reconfiguring of the roads near the highway. Unfortunately I kinda got ahead of myself in that area and there's few places where I can put tunnels to bypass the interstate.

Keep the population low and spread, probably sub 50k. This is a map based around a national park.

Low-to-zero pollution industries like lumber, high education to promote offices over industry, and tourism.

A rail system to connect the towns all together.

Pretty much. I think there are mods that attempt to fix it but I didn't have them for my last game and I had to put down like 6 extra cemeteries just to have enough hearses to keep up with everyone dying off at once. Made a pretty park area out of them, at least.

edit: was it? No idea what my issue was, then.

If you don't have enough health services you can end up with a lot of folks dying and it overwhelming the cemeteries and crematoriums. Gotta make sure to keep those citizens healthy. Also having polluted water can make people super sick really fast, and then they die. I used to have a mod that made citizens live 4x longer, but I don't think that's needed anymore.

The everyone dying at once thing was a bug that was fixed, if I remember correctly. Something about fixed maximum age instead of an age range or so? Either way, yes, if your services are underequipped you can still get bogged down, but that early problem with death waves is no longer an issue.
