PAX East 13+ events?

19 days and counting! Hugely psyched to be back for my 6th PAX East. With the event schedule now posted (WOO!), I'm making my decisions about which events to attend and which to skip at conflicting hours. This looks to be the first PAX where certain panels are flagged as for ages 13 and up. For any eventfolks with the knowledge to answer, I have a few questions on this:

1) Are these recommendations akin to the PG-13 rating? To quote the MPAA: "Parents strongly cautioned – some material may be inappropriate for children under 13". Technically, this doesn't prohibit theater owners from allowing 12 year olds in to the movie in question, but simply recommends parental supervision/consideration, unlike the R rating, which requires parent/guardian attendance. I guess what I'm asking is: are you going to be carding kids, or is it a recommendation to let parents know in advance, or something else?

2) Are the designations on which panels are 13+ and which aren't made by the panel producers, the event, or a mix of both? I ask because some events where salty language and frank discussions/drawings of a sexually graphic nature (e.g. Draw-a-Strip's double-headed dildo) are historically expected weren't given the designation.

3) Would you consider designations for specifically kid-friendly panels? For reference, I'm a dad, and will be bringing my 5 YO for his 2nd PAX ("The Video Game Show", as we call it). I've been to enough events to presume that most of the panels will be relatively sweariffic, but am hoping there'll be some events that I can take him to that won't leave him too weirded out or cursing repeatedly on the ride home/in pre-school the next week. For example, my boy loves Pokemon and Minecraft (shocking on both accounts, I know), but I'm hesitant to bring him to either the "Let's Play Pokemon" or Minecraft modding panels.

To note, I'm not mad about the designations. Far from it - I seek out info on the media/games my kid has interest in, and screen in advance when possible. I'm just curious about how the decisions were made and how they'll be Enforced (with a capital E - see what I did there?). If anything, I'd love to see the panels all assigned ratings like those used for broadcast/cable TV (http://www.tvguidelines.org/ for full details). Thoughts/answers? See y'all there!

I believe pax aus and pax south had these markings as well. I assume it is basically PG13, and designated by the panel producers (these are guesses).

I think if you want more designations, the best plan would be to fill out the post-pax survey and mention that, and/or also mention it in the feedback thread that we do after pax is over.

They are indeed something the panel creator designates. What criteria they are using probably varies a bit from panel to panel.

PAX has not carded in the past for US shows (PAX Aus runs by different stricter rules in this regard) and I'm not aware of any intention to card at East.

@zerzhul is right on for the more designations bit.

The ratings are given by the people presenting the panel. If you submitted a panel, one of the questions was "is this panel appropriate for people under 13?" It is just a guideline/suggestion, not carding at the door. It's then also up to the panelists to self-police, if they choose to do so. For example, I'm running a crafting panel (like arts and crafts, not minecraft or anything) and said it is appropriate for all ages because the topic of crafting is. However, I know sometimes I swear way too much (especially when nervous or exhausted), so I have to try to keep that in mind. Anything that has audience participation, like a q&a portion, becomes totally unpredictable far as content, unfortunately.

Little bit of personal advice based on a few of the panels. The minecraft modding at 11:30 Friday is by a group catered more towards kid-friendly with no cursing and the like. However the Gaming on youtube one on Saturday at 5:30 is probably not (by my opinion, anyway) approprite for kids because the people running it aren't concerned with how much they may curse and the like. It seems a quick google of the hosts may provide the best nuance to the 13+ or not situation. Just my 2 cents.

Good, constructive thoughts all. Thanks much guys. I'd Googled the Pokemon panel hosts as I was submitting the question (everybody seems pretty clean), so great minds think alike.

I think this option is new this year. All my panels are family-friendly, but I must've goofed on the submission, as two of the three were labeled as 13+. Fortunately, TPTB graciously responded to my belated request for that label to be removed. But I wonder if any other panel moderators made a similar mistake?
