    So apparently at one point the military was working on nuclear shape charges. Which seems like a very pointed way to say fuck you to so some. The basic idea is that someone realized that the Orion drive is pretty inefficient. But if you could fuck around with the materials you could get the plasma jet to be much faster and narrower. Turns out that will fuck up the pusher plate but you can turn it into a space weapon.

    Early science fiction writers grappled with the issue that any rocket that was powerful enough to go interesting places was also automatically a weapon of mass destruction. That's why they started to come up with hyper drives and warp drives and all that jazz, because you do not necessarily want your characters to have that kind of weapon because it really changes decision making.

    Most of the references to it being deployed are part of SDI. Basically deploy a bunch in space and tag Soviet ICBMs during the lift off phase.
