I am fed up of getting shoehorned into designing tees based on what I think other people will like. Instead, I'm going to start my own limited line of stuff that I'd want to wear. I am going to be developing a bunch of ideas over the next couple of weeks or so, so I'll post them all up in this thread.
I know it might take alot of effort, but I think that shirt would be a thousand times cooler if each cassette had an individual label for whatever was on the film.
I find the design to be rather dull. I don't really find the design to be very well presented. I think it is an interesting idea, which could be developed into something a little more visually entertaining.

Uhh... look closer. Each tape DOES have a unique label. Also, I'd wear this if it had half as many tapes. That's just too many.
However, I generally love your work, Moss. I look forward to seeing more designs!
I think it would look better if there was occasionally some space between the tapes. Also it might seem a bit more balanced if the rectangle of tapes flared out at the bottom as well as the top.
I disagree with cutting the number of tapes, or even putting space between the tapes. For my first tee I want something immediately distinctive. I'm a fan of bright colours and big prints. It's meant to be a bit crazy and a bit jarring. I want the theme to be experimental, and I want my tees to be something I'd wear.
Oh, and it's slightly tapered because large designs that flare out at the bottom make the wearer look fat.
Best of luck on the branching out on your own thing, let us know how that turns out. I think your name has enough stock with your threadless background that you wont have any trouble getting PR and stuff with magazines and websites.
Well you succeeded in your intentions to make the shirt jarring : / The colors seek to overwhelm me. The design is sorta dull despite the kaleidoscopic casettes because it doesn't lead the eye anywhere and the repetition of the casettes' forms become monotonous. At -least- play with space or lead the eye with color to create a rythm . I know you're designing this tshirt without regards to other people's thought's but let's hope your antipathy (for lack of a better word) will be moderated with artistic sensibility.
If you start your own site or anything, let me know. I've always been a fan of your work on threadless, but I always seemed to miss them before they went out of stock.
Also a big fan of your general style, such as things you post in the doodle thread and whatnot. Anyway, I look forward to buying up your designs if you make them available.
Except for this one. I don't have anything against large designs, they just don't look good on me. I agree with you on the colors, though. I like them.
I didn't expect this first shirt to be a hit at the AC, but that's sort of the point. I want to do limited runs of crazy designs that will appeal to a niche audience.
Despite a little spatial tweaking, I doubt I will change much in this design. They may be somewhat lost in this preview version, but the multiple transparencies look pretty cool up close. It's something that I don't think has been properly done on a tee before.
I like almost everything that I've seen that you've designed, including this. It's an odd design, to be sure, and barely aesthetically pleasing, but given the way I dress, it's actually something that I'd wear probably, with my jacket over. I'm glad that the top of the tape-estry curves to offset the neck, also.
You really should just do shirts you would like to wear. Mostly because if you wouldn't want to wear a shirt with a big honkin' piece of crap on it, I don't think anyone else would.
Also, make it scratch and sniff.;-)
I actually wish there were more tapes, like front and back, COVERED in tapes. Really.
Anyway. I look forward to you doing your thing without whoring to trends, moss. Are you just going to build your own site and sell them, or are you going to do something else? I'd be interested in knowing how your doing this business wise, I have some friends who want to start selling their own tees.
I've a friend who has a clothing line going on at my high school. It started back about three years ago in our sophomore year. Its actually taken off quite more than I expected it to. She has people in larger cities- Austin, San Antonio, LA- that she ships to and they sell the clothing. But I guess she's doing pretty well off with her designs seeing that she got accepted to some fashion school in LA and what not... but I think she's taking a little break from it since her grades have been crap as of late.
It took me three minutes to realize you were talking about t-shirts... I kept reading it as 'I am developing my own line of trees'.
Me too! I was like "making your own trees...? This could be cool!"
Then I get t-shirts that should probably just be on Threadless anyway. Making your own thing will be hard as hell. It would probably do you better to start on threadless first cause you'll get exposure even quicker and then you could move on from there. Unless that's what you're already doing, then nevermind.

i like it, i mean i can see what some of you are saying but i think going overboard on the tapes does give it a certain style. kind of like designer clothing that is a little 'out there' but if you can rock stuff like this than it will get you a double-look a lot quicker that most of the run of the mill stuff out there. i think combined with the individual captions on all the tapes it works. definitely not for everyone but like moss said this stuff is more about what he enjoys making and not what gains mass appeal.
looking forward to new designs and that spoiler shirt man, that might be the one to push me into picking up my first threadless t

Everything is overused. Tshirts are overused.
If you're going to do anything, just have a bunch of people fucking. That will be great.

Vertical placement for girls, so as not to emphasise the boobies.
Maybe the guys' placement could benefit from a rotation too.
Opinions?
e: and 'REMIX' should go either at the top or bottom of the vertical placement, not to the side.
greatest shirt idea ever!
