New Digital Camera

I'm looking for a new, compact digital camera. My old one, a standard Kodak EasyShare, is about 5 years old, very clunky, and eats batteries faster than a fat kid eats cake.

I'm looking for something between $150-$250 CAD, that is good for taking pictures at parties (low light) and just carrying around. I don't plan on printing any of the pictures, so 4-5 megapixels will be enough, and I have a few old memory cards which I hope will still be compatable. I'd also like something that won't gobble up my batteries. I'm not overly worried about noise or fuzzyness in the photos because I doubt I'll be blowing them up to big.

I've been looking at the Kodak EasyShare V803, but all the reviews I've read say it's mediocre at best, but I haven't found one I like more for the price. I understand that I'm not going to find a perfect 10/10 camera for such a low price, but I want something that's worth it.

Does anybody have suggestions?

I'm really fond of my Powershot Digital Elph SD600. It's a great for just pointing and shooting, it takes good pictures, the LCD screen is big, beautiful and responsive, the batteries last a long time, it's tiny and the interface is pretty straightforward. That said, it only takes SD cards, but you can get a 1GB card for pretty cheap these days.

That's about $100 more than I'd like to spend.

I know I'm not going to need anything more than a mid-range camera, but reading the reviews makes me hesitant to buy anything. /sigh. So overwhelming.

No it's not. Get a used or cheaper one and it's right at the upper range of what you're willing to spend.

    Canon Powershot A550, 7.1 MP, 4x optical zoom, $249.99 CAD @ BestBuy.ca

At that price range, you're going to have trouble finding something that doesn't get noisy in low light conditions. But if you're not worried about that...

I would go to the electronic stores and just ask some questions on what is what with which models and what features they offer. Then, buy it online. Really though, you should find a good camera to accommodate your price range.
