[Doomtown: Reloaded] - Gunfights in the Weird West

Ghostly ClockworkGhostly Clockwork Registered User regular
Hey everyone, I'm here to talk about Doomtown. What's Doomtown you ask? It's a CCG in the vein of Android: Netrunner, what with the set expansion sets, but the core gameplay is very different. The original CCG was one of my all time favorite games with the setting and the storyline. I could go in depth of rules and explanations, but it's a lot easier just to show you this review of Doomtown: Reloaded by the good people from Shut Up and Sit Down.

Watch and enjoy!

Now, you also may be asking, "Great, so what?" Well, I'm trying to get people up and around to play with each other talk cards and deck building and whatnot, cause while this is a great game, it's somewhat new and it needs people talking to get it to flow. I'm currently in the process of building decks myself, but in any case, Love to get more of the PA forum community in on this great game!

I dig Doomtown. I built a Sloane Deathstar deck that I haven't actually gotten to play yet...

Well, it sounds like a lot of the lasers that blow up deeds!

My personal favorite deck is a Law Dog with the Mad Science mayoral candidate (I forget his name), who's apparently running on a platform of "Holy Wheel Guns for Everyone!" to get elected.

I do have a 4th Ring put together that relies entirely on Mario Crane and Arnold to make him essentially unkillable, but I feel that decks that rely too much on a single character do badly for me.

Yah, I'm working on a Law Dogs deck that is more or less built around punishing my opponent violently every time they reveal a cheatin' hand. Nothing is better than seeing someone put down 5 of a kind, and then get hit with bottom dealing, and get a jack high. My girlfriend currently is playing Morgan, as they have lots of mad science in the mix, which she's a big fan of.

Your starting posse should be Allie Hensman, Gensee "Gina" Tailfeathers, and Sloane. You focus on methods to keep Sloane protected/even more frightening, like Hidin' In Shadows, Warpaint, and Peacemakers. You also run very, very few Diamonds. You keep Allie Hensman in Townsquare and start using her ability every single turn to gain a control point. If anyone calls her out, Sloane can enter the posse with extreme prejudice. With a Peacemaker and the right draw structure, Sloane can near guarantee legal Straight Flush draws every time. You also run Clementine Lepp to protect your Saloons and Steven Wilkes cause.... well, Wilkes. Through in a couple Pikes and then make the rest A-8 of Clubs.

Hmm...Isn't the Deathstar weak against cards that kill based on value? Allie is only an Ace ranking. And I saw! I'm looking forward to the first Pine Box. I just wish like hell there would be tourneys for this in Seattle. I can't find any!

I suppose but you're also running that Ace of Clubs that lets you get a dude back from your discard. If she gets aced that's a problem but I don't think there any cards yet that outright ace a target.

I never claimed it was a good plan, either. :)

In a shoot out, sure. If they have a Shotgun you decline and boot her, then send Sloane after the person with a shotgun. I meant outside of a Shoot Out.

There's a bunch of cards that can mess with booted people, especially with people who're wanted. But if anyone would like, I'd be down with playing a few games on OCTGON, I can try out my Lawful Good deck. Or if anyone is in Seattle, I'm trying to get Café Mox to do a tourney or something, but they need more people to request it.

Looking forward to that release, that's gonna be fun. I do wonder how many different factions they're gonna end up with. The original Doomtown had I think...9. Law Dogs, BlackJacks, Wheatlys (which I miss), Collegum, Sweetrock, Sioux Nation, Agency, Texas Rangers and Flock. Made it kinda hard to have releases, as you had to have 9 dudes to cover your bases, otherwise some factions would pull ahead of others.

I doubt they're going to release all nine of the original factions. Too hard to balance for, which is important in sustaining the health of an expanding card card. I'm guessing we'll maybe still see the Sioux Nation at some point in the future which would make five factions. That's just speculation of course. It's not like AEG doesn't already have one game with a ridiculous number of factions in it (and suffers from balance issues because of it).

And also some of those old factions are just straight-up dead. Morgan's basically Sweetrock 2.0 (if Max being around wasn't obvious enough), the Collegium's deader than the mayor candidates...

I could see maybe one or two being added in via a pine box, but I'd be okay with the four we have now just getting different houses.

Oh sure, i dont even want them to have 10 (forgot maze rats) factions, thats just way too many. The Souix Nation would be fine and that would make it 5. If you want to add flavor, you could make them the "monster hunters" and combine then with splashes of the Agency and Rangers.

I saw that! That guy looks pretty powerful, I mean, put a horse on him and just run around and unboot dudes all day. You may have to rethink your deck, as I think Law Dogs are "clumped" around lower numbers, but still, for that guy, worth it.

On a different note, being that I've had no luck finding any game stores around here to run a tourney for the release of the Pine Box, what would people here think of trying to run a virtual tourney through OCTGN? Yah...That seems really worrying. Does help stop Allie Control point generator a bit. Makes it harder for Slone to turtle in town square. New ones too in Hexes and Deeds.

I'd be interested in another OCTGN tournament at some point, though :)
