We need feminism because a lawmaker who thinks the vagina is connected to the stomach wants to legislate women's bodies.
What the fuck kind of country do we live in where there's no education requirement to be a politician?
In some places, people fucking celebrate their ignorance. Not knowing a damn thing about the subject you're regulating is practically a requirement for being a politician, in any given subject. It's sickening.
The vicious protection and lauding of stupidity is something I really hope the US is alone in but I'm sadly sure I'm wrong.
There's a term I can't remember that deals with accuracy of news reporting. The gist is, if you're particularly knowledgeable about a subject, it's really obvious to you when news reports about that subject get it incredibly wrong. And that's most of the time. You can assume, then, that if they're this inaccurate about stuff you know, they're probably equally inaccurate about stuff you don't know. The lesson is, don't trust the analyses given in news reports because the person who wrote it probably doesn't know what they're talking about. I wish we could teach this lesson to people about both journalism and politics, because it applies equally there.
That's like how medical professionals cannot watch the show House, MD, right?
This explains my love hate relationship with Mythbusters

Now I have to be the jerk who posts an xkcd!
But yeah, I wish they'd actually address the rigor thing. Maybe they have, and I just never saw that episode.
Mythbusters is the science equivalent of a big dumb action movie. It's bad science, but the spectacle of it all makes it enjoyable to watch nonetheless.

Now I feel all period-shamed because my period apparently isn't as easy and carefree as other people's
*cries and hides*
I feel period shamed because I don't get a period and some people think that makes me less of a woman.
This is straight up BULLSHIT
Like it makes me angry, it's such bullshit
Having my period is my least favorite part of being a woman, I certainly wouldn't imply that it's what MAKES me one
I'd be happy to get rid of it honestly
Usually you can - I mean I'm not a doctor but as far as I know there's no reason most people can't just take their birth control straight through without the placebo week (ymmv of course). That 7 days off is just bullshit convention, people in the 70s thought it was 'weird' not to have a period.
Yeah but then I need a new pack every 24 days instead of 28 and it mucks up the whole schedule, including how insurance will cover it

I guess the only thing is that your womb lining wouldn't shed and keep building up?? I dunno if I just made that up.
Also @Metalbourne the conversation has passed and I know you know it cause you're not dumb, but hell no, no one can you're any more or less of a woman than you are. You are who you know you are.

Oh, I know what you mean. I'm too cheap and lazy to actually bother doing this much of the time, but sometimes if I'm travelling a lot I power through.

Depends on the pill composition but AFAIK modern pills stop your lining building up in the first place, which is part of the process for preventing implantation - the period you get on the pill is supposed to be kind of a fake one where your body is 'whoop better shed this... not particularly thick lining I guess!'

Don't completely take my word for it though, this info is reconstituted from half-heard sex ed classes and rambling conversations with my GP friends. I could be off base.
edit: but it's one of the reasons going on the pill sometimes helps with heavy periods and endometriosis

Oh they can, but they play the game my wife played where she would diagnose his patients before he did.
No I think you're right, it sounds right to me like you say from bits of knowledge etc! Its been 8 years since starting the pill and having the "this is what it does" talk but I think you're right.
Also I read that buzzfeed article about all the crap an American girl had to go through the get an implant and it was horrendous.
I have considered going no period but I like the monthly reminder that I am not pregnant, and thankfully my period is not that bad, relatively speaking.
is it bad that i want to go to grad school, but i want to find a professor in my field who isn't an old white man?
cause holy fucking shit you want diversity look at top-tier grad schools and cry
Each of the science departments at my alma mater had precisely one female professor, and they were all pretty amazeballs to the tune of being several times as knowledgeable as their male counterparts and having far more credentials.
There was a poster for a Women In Architecture lecture the other day that I saw, I thought it was pretty cool they'd got guest speakers in to talk about it, architecture is crazy competitive as it is without being a woman. ( I did not go, not an architect but cool) I bet they have to push themselves way harder than their male counterparts. Good for uni for promoting it though!

Because you have to be, if you're a woman.
Which is a problem.
I fully realize this sounds very entitled and totally up my own arse
But I really hate being a fucking poster child for women engineers

Nah, I get it. You don't need to qualify that feeling!
I don't think that up your own arse, you've been kinda forced into it by virtue of being one of so few, you never asked for that role but nevertheless here you are, no doubt feeling pressure from others and from yourself because if you don't do it who will? You don't want to let anyone else so you've been stuck with it, you're justified I think.

One of my best friends in college was one of the two girls in our class and she had to deal with that exact same thing. They all but forced her to be part of this women in engineering organization (not that she didn't support the cause but we all had pretty much zero free time as it was, doing stuff for organizations was not how any of us wanted to spend what little we had).

Yes this is absolutely part of it, at least for Beyaz (which is what I am currently on)
Pre-birth control, my period was heavy, painful and every 3 weeks
Now it's light, very little pain, and every 28 days right on the dot
I have an IUD and I don't get a period anymore! Yay! I was the woooorst at remembering to take the pill so this is much more convenient. And it was incredibly easy for me to get it, and it was free. Hooray decent insurance.
I watched Ghostbusters 1 and 2 last night and holy balls those movies are sexist as hell. I never realized what an intensely creepy character Peter Venkman is.

I mean, I can understand the placebo week when birth control was new; skipping your period until then always meant, "oh, shit, am I knocked up?" and keeping the period was a way to reassure people that this newfangled pill was effective. But there's no need for it these days.
Also, I'm switching from Mirena to Paragard and I wish the damn people would call me back so I can schedule my damn appointment. Dammit.

Starting in January, Bushelle and Harper began researching photos of important African-American women, and decided to do a photo series for Black History Month where [their 5-year old daughter] Lily would be photographed as a different black heroine every week. Although they originally intended to limit the project to February, Bushelle and Harper decided to continue the series.
