Painting/Modding a NERF Gun

Hey folks,

I've been wanting to try my hand at modding a NERF gun for a while now, and I think I'm ready to take the plunge. Specifically, I have a Zombie Strike Hammershot (an awesome blaster), that I want to give a paint job designed after the Future War Cult from Destiny. So, it's going to be a lot of solid blue and black, with some 'stressed metal' highlights and maybe a faux-wood finish on the handle. I might try to find a real piece of cloth or leather to cover the fake wrap on the handle. I don't think I want to try for a serious body modification just yet; for now, I'll stick with mastering some painting basics.

I've been looking up plenty of guides and videos on the Interwebs, but I feel like there are probably some people on this forum with experience in NERF mods who might be able to give me a few pointers. ;) I'd appreciate any thoughts, advice, good how-to guides you've stumbled across, horror stories of what NOT to do, etc.

Two questions I have off the bat:
  • Is there a specific kind of paint I should use?
  • Are 'performance mods' really worth it? Will they really give extra power/distance?

Thanks!
