Any good options for a cell phone to use whle travelling internationally?

I have a co-worker going to India for three weeks and using her cell phone over there will cost a huge amount of money. Is there some kind of cheaper temp phone or something a person can get?

There are definitely prepaid option available over there. I've also heard things about purchasing a local prepaid SIM card and just swapping for the duration but am really fuzzy on the details.

Yeah, purchasing a SIM card is the way to go. Might even be able to just rent/purchase (or borrow if she knows someone in the area) a cheap old phone with SIM card so they don't have to worry about losing their real phone.
That's what my wife does whenever she goes to Hong Kong.

Generally speaking international rates are atrocious so for communications you have three main options.

    1. Bring your phone and change the SIM card. I did that in Vietnam. If your hotel is not able to do it themselves they should be able to take you to a store to change it and set you up with some minutes and data. I think for 600mb, some minutes and a new SIM card I paid around $15 which was more than sufficient for my needs. If you absolutely must have access when you land you can get this done at the airport with employees that likely speak English but I imagine it's a fairly high premium.

    2. Buy a new phone there, again your hotel should be able to help you. Unless you're paying a lot though you're getting a shit camera and potentially no access to things like google maps which are quite useful.

    3. Use your phone to log on to the hotel wifi and use a program like Skype to call home or to the office.

Honestly the best option is the first one. Just to note, I've been warned by locals while traveling sometimes to be careful where I take my phone out as people riding by might try to snatch it. Things like iPhones are actually more expensive in some asian countries and it's well known how valuable they are

T-Mobile here in the US has some pretty awesome international plans. Their simple choice plan has unlimited text/data and 20c/min talk in India.

I've used them a lot of different places, and it's been pretty stellar service. It's no contract, so you could get a sim here and just deactivate the account or put it on hold when you get back.

That, or if you don't want or need data/texting, just get a GSM unlocked phone before you go and pop a SIM in. I bought a Samsung T-199 on Amazon for like $35 last week.
