I am disappointed that the multiplayer component of Rainbow Six: Vegas does not have voice commands or hand signals, so voice chat is the obvious way to go.
I've used Ventrilo before, and the one major complaint I had was that I had to use public rooms (unless I wanted to pay, which I don't). This led to people occassionally popping into my game channel and being dumb.
I haven't used TeamSpeak before, so I'd like to get some opinions on that. Especially opinions of people who have used both, thanks.
afaik you can create your own teamspeak and ventrilo servers on your PC, or a second PC not running the game.
when I was playing WoW way back in the day we had a vent server on our raid leaders PC. Worked fine. Takes a bit or setting up though and I think its a system hog but i wouldnt even consider paying for something like this.

In short. Ventrillo has a lot more options, but for cost.
To host your own Vent server can be as cheap as 5bucks a month, which allows you the privledge of banning IPs. requiring passwords for specific channels. Pretty much anything you could do on a forum.
As a standard user of vent, if you don't own the server, it doesn't take much to simply mute someone.
Right Click <name>, User Options, Mute
Edit: Most vent servers aren't run from your computer, but from a server of the company you are renting it from. One of the reasons teamspeak is free, is because you run it. Too many people can cause you latency issues though.

Use teampseak a lot, i have tried vent, it annoyed me and i really didnt like it compared to TS.
TS servers seem relatively easy to set up, but then again im sure Vent ones are easy to set up aswell.
Both appear to have helpful communities for setting these things up.
As for paying for them, i would recommend doing so, i use TS with a bunch of friends and we rotate who pays each time its due, cost roughly £30 for 10 people for 6 months. which works out at £5 a month. we've used several different server providers and the only ones that didnt fuck us over/werent absolutely utterly shite, are Jolt.
I really do recommend renting/making your own server if you dont want to be annoyed by random wankers. if you cant do either, see if you can get an admin on a server you frequent to be nice and make you a passworded channel, so that asshats cant get in it.
This is just for two people playing a Co-op game. It sounds like I am able to set up a free TeamSpeak server from my machine at the cost of my own bandwidth, is that right?

Unfortunately, R6:Vegas doesn't play nice with Alt+Tab, else this would be a good suggestion.

if its just for 2 people, have you considered using something like Google Talk? im unsure as to how well it would run, but if it works, could save you a bit of bandwidth and there are no dicks can randomly join in.
Theoritically it could work, something worth a try before you go setting up servers

I think you can set up Vent to Mute Everyone by default, and then, before your game, just unmute those you're playing with.
Thanks for the great suggestions. If I can set up Vent to auto-mute everybody, that'd be perfect. Google Talk is something I will definately have to check into, since I already use GMail for chatting.
I don't mean to hijack the thread or anything but does Ventrilo allow whispers to multiple people? In Teamspeak you could set up a key to whisper to to multiple people at once, but my current EQ guild uses Ventrilo instead and its REALLY frustrating not being able to whisper to my buddies. I figured out how to set a key to whisper to just one person, but not multiple people on the same key.

Yes it does. I'm not sure how, but people in my guild use that function all the time.
So like
F1 = Talk to channel
F2 = Talk to Kor
F3 = Talk to HalberdBlue
etc...

Edit: TS does same stuff as Kor mentioned
Probably as I havn't touched TS in almost over 4 years.
