here's one of my favorite pirate diddies

There once was pirate named Gold Roger, who was the King of the Pirates.
He had fame, power and wealth beyond your wildest dreams.
Before they hung him from the gallows, these were the final words he said.
"My fortune is yours for the taking, but you'll have to find it first.
I left everything I own in One Piece.
Ever since, pirates from all over the world set sail for the Grand Line
searching for One Piece the treasure that will make their dreams
come true."

Yo!

Ya-yo Ya yo!

Dreamin', don't give it up Luffy.
Dreamin', don't give it up Zolo.
Dreamin', don't give it up Nami!
Dreamin', don't gi-give it up give it up give it up give it up give it-no!

Here's how the story goes we find out, about a treasure
in the Grand Line there's no doubt.
The pirates whose eyes on it he'll sing "I'll be King of the Pirates,
I'm goin' to be King!"

Ya-yo Ya-yo Ya-yo, uh-oh.
His name is Luffy (that's Monkey D. Luffy)
Goin' to be king of the pirates.

He's made of rubber (How did that happen)
Yo-ho-ho, he took a bite of gum-gum

Ya-yo Ya yo

His name Zolo, he's just like a samarai.
And a L.A.D.Y, Nami's not shy.
Usopps doing that marksman thing, Sanji cooking, Choppers doctoring
Ya-yo Ya-yo Ya-yo, uh-oh
Set sail for One Piece, it's the name of the treasure
In the Grand Line.

Ya-yo, Ya-yo set sail for One Piece!

I've talked about this before, but my town has a sea shanty festival every year, and people come from all over england to dress up like pirates and sing the same 6 songs over and over.

It's kind of fun for about an hour.

edit: Also I harbour a secret but lasting resentment for any group that sings "Bound for South Australia" because in south australia you were NOT born. I was! I'm the only one here, dammit!

Is one of those songs "When You're a Professional Pirate"? If not I suggest getting a group together and singing it loudly until everyone else joins in.

The song in the OP is actually from the turn of the century, and adapted from this older set of Japanese lyrics, believed to have originated on fishing boats at the end of the last century

The most interesting part of pirate history to me is how the seemingly innocuous discovery of something like rubber had a huge impact on the balance of naval power, and even disrupted the operations of major governments.

    Blackbeard, eh?

There would be no Blackbeard without his first captain, Benjamin Hornigold.

A pirate who chose to hunt literally every ship except British vessels, so that if captured by the Crown, he could say he was a freelance privateer.

A pirate who one time had this said about him after capturing a ship:
they did us no further injury than the taking most of our hats from us, having got drunk the night before, as they told us, and toss'd theirs overboard"

A pirate who did the most mutinous, piratey thing possible who, when captured, instantly turned on all of his fellow pirates and chose to hunt them all down in exchange for pardons.

I'm a fan of Henry Mainwaring, who started as a Lawyer, then became a Pirate, and then retired as a Politican (the jokes largely write themselves)

He's also one of the few famous pirates who did manage to retire peacefully.

My favourite part is in exchange for a pardon, he wrote a book on how to suppress piracy, in which a key piece of advice was to never, ever pardon pirates.

"to set them at liberty is but licensing them to enter into the same way again, for that the most part of them will never be reclaimed, as appears plainly by those who have been heretofore pardoned”10:45 AM

that is drenched in equal parts irony and hypocrisy and I love it
