[Konami] I guess they remembered they're supposed to make games?
I mentioned this in the Castlevania thread the other day, but they could not have timed this Bloodstained announcement better with all of Konami's recent behavior. It's basically transferring all that ill will into a positive force.

I'd be shocked if they didn't specifically plan to unveil the game at the height of this backlash. It's too conveniently timed, and it sounds like the game is a long, long ways off. They struck while the iron was hot.
Of course, I applaud them for that, and may in fact support their cause.
And... ding. 3 1/2 hrs to fund Bloodstained. This makes me happy...
What a miraculous age for gaming.
Not only can people say "fuck you" to shitty publishers, they can say it by paying the people responsible for making those publishers big to make games themselves without the asshole publisher getting in the way!

Yeah but we can still manage to back a big ol' David Hayter fuck you to Konami. And that, in many ways, is just as good.
(Incidentally, that stretch goal has been reached.)

Maybe not, if that kickstarter keeps on trucking. How big can the budget get? ;p

It's Konami, who will use the kickstarte funds to publicly execute Iga, unless David Hayter can sneak into the compound and rescue him in 48 hours.

Probably a new start up like Inafune's company. It's not hard to get investors with this model now. Kickstarters are advertising and a way to judge demand and if you have a few huge games under your belt your experience is just as enticing.

Holy shit Konami. Do you really not understand how the Western world works? Even if they legally could get something like that shut down, the perfect way to get everybody to look at it is to tell people not to look at it. Basic human nature, right there.
Just... fucking hell.
But then again, I cannot even fathom why a company would dump on profitable IPs for absolutely no good reason, so clearly, I am not equipped to understand the Konami/Capcom level of fuck-up.
Japanese companies are weird. the poorly run ones are run like American TV networks where vendettas and grudges decide things instead of profits. Capcom being the prime example. Their entire management system should have been flushed ages ago. Konami as a whole doesn't like it's Video game wing but it's share holders probably wouldn't like them selling off profitable IPs so we get shit like this.

Yeah. I could be wrong here, but I've heard second-hand that the work culture can also be wildly different. Just little things where dedication to the corporate job can be counted more by the hours spent in the office rather than actual achievement (or something to that effect), and where negotiation between people on the lower end of the corporate ladder is less of a negotiation and more of a communication of immutable terms laid out by the seniority (and terms which cause the other party concerns have to be relayed back to seniority before anything can be changed - which may also cause offense).
That last point I gleaned from a conversation I had with a fellow I know who works for the Department of Immigration
So someone over in SE++ tried to install a new hard drive in their PS4 and apparently the pulling of the PT demo was done in such a way that it's shit canning the console whenever you try to do a full reset since it can't find it on PSN so it refuses to let you use any of your licenses. He says the PS forums are full of people complaining about the same thing; can't confirm because that's blocked at work.
Anyone hear about this? I guess it may have been due to the maintenance they did as well.

I can't say I've heard anything good from the Japanese game development industry at large in several years. All the stories I've heard have have been repetitions of exactly what you said, so it makes complete sense as to why the folks with the big names are finally up and leaving Japanese developers/publishers. Total inflexibility seems to be the rule for management, and if you aren't in charge you get absolutely no avenue for input. The Western side of that equation is hardly all kittens and rainbows, but dang, I would've struck out on my own years ago if I were a lot of these guys.
Something like From Software definitely seems to be the exception to the rule for Japanese developers these days. But on the upside, the growth of crowdfunded games has created a platform for these big names to get to make what they want without the crazy Japanese corporate politics getting in the way. I just hope these guys get to deliver in a big way, instead of crashing and burning outside the heavily-controlled setting they've been developing in for many years.
This sounds like it's completely Sony's fuckup. Their system has no idea what to do when one game can't refresh its license?
The question is, will Sony support the revocation of the license, and their fix render PT unplayable, or will they side with consumers, and allow PT to be played without license or with a new license?

Has it ever happened before? Far as I know, every delisted game stays available on people's download lists. And having a game with an expired license (ala a lapsed PS+ subscription) doesn't burn everything down. Seems they created a unique situation by pulling this one game from download lists and surprise! It fucked everything up.

They probably figured no one would ever be pissy enough to completely scrub a game from the system, since, well, nobody ever really does that. Until now.
Why the crap did I ever make my original name "cloudeagle?"

I dunno, I really don't think they ever anticipated that a publisher would be so fucking stupid as to completely pull a game because they arbitrarily decided to cancel a major project with some big names, to the disappointment of a lot of fans. I really cannot blame Sony for not having anticipated that scenario.
The whole concept is just so stupid. They clearly just want people to forget PT was ever a thing, but this two thousand and fucking fifteen, not the mid-90s; you can't just pull something like and pretend it never happened, hoping everyone will just play along.

Well, not to give justification to Konami for their actions or anything, but pulling games off digital marketplaces is shockingly common. They just always still technically leave it up in some fashion for previous owners to redownload. Removing all traces of it completely is in a way the next logical step. I mean I say logical even though nobody has done it, but it's hardly some unforeseeable act. That it brings the entire system to its knees instead of simply the one game is bizarre. You would expect that the game would just go "I can't seem to authorize this... I ain't launching" and leave everything else alone.

I wonder why this freeze isn't happening to everyone tho. I mean, shouldn't it be?
Any authentication worth its salt would only check home on a staggered schedule. This would be even more true for the PS4 after the whole always-online blowup from the beginning of the generation.

My guess is that licenses are cached on the console; they don't have to be checked with PSN constantly. If you try to do something that initiates a call home to check the license, though, you'd run into the issue.
I couldn't tell you exactly what activities would initiate a license check (though HDD install would obviously be one), but simply playing things on your console with valid, cached licenses almost certainly wouldn't.

Nope, some games have been delisted and can no longer be downloaded. The only one I've had it happen with is one of the Magical Drop games off the Japanese PSN, so it wasn't a huge loss, but it's something they definitely can do.
It doesn't mess up my licenses though, just means that when I replaced my PS3 HD I couldn't get it back.

I get the impression that Konami went "oh shit, people will be pissed we cancelled this, DESTROY ALL EVIDENCE".
And Sony cooperated, as they are legally obligated, but they had no plans to handle such a douche move.
