What school has pink graduation regalia?

HypatiaHypatia Registered User regular
I am at a graduation and the professors are wearing the caps and gowns of the school they got their PhD from. There is someone here with a very pink robe and my google-fu is failing. What school is this robe from?

Most likely for the college of music.

    Scroll down to intercollegiate colors.

Huh...I'd guess the robe itself is very faded and used to be a different color, or that it's from an obscure or non-American institution.

Harvard robes invariably go from crimson to kind of magenta (if they were ever crimson to begin with), but I've never seen them fade that far...maybe something like a red Boston University robe left out in the sun?

If I were you I'd have accosted the professor and asked; that's how I found out about the unique and interesting UPenn robes (kinda maroon with half-blue sleeves).

fun fact, us professors just usually get them given to us for free for the convocation. it is rare to actually buy them

Pretty much all the professors at my undergrad bought their robes, but I noticed that even at similar liberal arts colleges hardly anyone did and most were just rocking rented/free black robes with their hoods. I came really close to buying my regalia but I'm just sticking with my crappy free hood.

Isn't the specialty defined by the sash or hood? So Music would be a pink sash, while the robe is actually the school colors? Or is it the other way around? I can't remember

it depends really. my school has a standard black robe with a a blue/gold sashy hood thing.

some schools have different color robes.
i think harvard is maroon etc.

the school i teach at has bright red robes

Hm, yeah, I know some schools have different color robes, we identified the grey robes as MIT, the black with a tartan print as CMU, and our school's is bright red. Other than that, I know some of the linings are different based on the discipline, but the pink seems so completely out there.

Pink is for a Music Department chair or representative, usually.

the tricky part is some schools have acceptable alternate robe colors. my degree is a UC school, which is technically a black robe with a blue hood+ science gold), but it is acceptable to wear a navy robe also

oh, right, I forgot that custom, where the department chair gets the whole robe the color of their specialty. I remember seeing the organist at some commencement once who was wearing all pink.

If it's an older professor it could be Harvard robes. Apparently the dye Harvard used back in the day fades really badly. One of the senior Russian literature professors from my undergrad had Harvard robes that had faded to flamingo pink.

Ah, I gotcha, thank you! I wasn't sure how the special robes worked for chairs although I know our chancellor was wearing a different colored one. I should have asked him but he was never quite close enough.
