So, we've tried twice, but I think there's a chance for a thread about this game to take off. Nobody expected Puzzle Quest AKA Bejeweled RPG to be as fun or addictive as it turned out to be. I know I haven't taken it out of the DS since I picked it up.
Set against a whimsical Far Eastern backdrop with a light-hearted martial arts theme, Zendoku is a puzzle game that combines action with Sudoku, and offers a variety of colorful characters and a comprehensive range of single-player and wireless multi-player game modes.
Now, I'm enjoying the hell out of Puzzle Quest, and I like Sudoku. I'm not too fast at it, but I can't think of any better motivation to improve than advancing a story and gaining levels and whatnot. I'm leaning toward the DS version on this one, too as touch control just seems like a natural way to go, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that the PSP version looks gorgeous and that I prefer the character portraits on the side of the board.
Zendoku should be available for purchase this spring.
I personally love the DS version. having played it, i really enjoyed using the stylus to interact with in the battles and puzzles.
getting used to the pictures they use instead of numbers took a little bit of time but once you do it makes it a much more colourful and visually pleaseing game to be playing.
I hope there's an option to go back to numbers. I already know how to play Sudoku that way.
Also, it would be nice if there were a single-player quick action option available. Then I could finally play single-player Sudoku on the DS without having to buy Brain Age.
Also, somebody needs to release a DS Picross game.
I've just started here in the community department and I do have complete respect for you and any other gamers. i just wanted to chat about the game not needlessly promote it.
Hello jclast:
There is an option to just play standard Sudoku with numbers which offers another option from Brain Age, which I really didn't like. i found it so boring, there is just nothing to it apart from the few simple puzzles that you keep playing. i know the point is to "train" your brain every day, I just didn't get into it at all.
no unfortunately you can't write in the numbers like Brain Age.
The numbers are all around the board on the sides and you select them and place them where they belong. this technique works really well when you are playing the puzzle games, because the pictures are along the side and remind you which ones you are missing.

this is what's kept me from buying any sudoku game other than brain age. paper and pen is easy, IMO, than having to jump around the \screen with a stylus, and switch which number is toggled every single time I notice something.
yeah it is a shame because i like the writing idea myself.
personally i play this one more for the puzzle elements and the variation of the original game. still it's good fun sometimes just to play with the numbers.
Assuming that you've at least played the Puzzle Quest demo, sparkles, does Zendoku have anything similar to the spells that game has, or are battls just straight up sudoku puzzles, with no tweaks at all?
Evander:
Battle quest in Zendoku involves you playing against one of the chosen characters, and trying to complete a Sudoku grid as fast as you can, without them beating you. If you happen to take too long thinking about one move or you are doing badly you will get sent mini challenges by your opponent, such as smashing bricks or unrolling scrolls with the stylus.
These challenges then make it a bit more tricky because your train of thought is taken up with something else and distracts you from the puzzle.
yeah,
that's what makes it a bit more interesting, and like i said the mini games are more of an obstacle because they distract you from what you should be doing and where you are in the puzzle.

I've seen this around for $10.
In the picross thread we talk about Essential Soduku which is very very low budget. But it has 1000 Sudoks and 1000 Picross's to do. Soduku's handwriting recognition is broken for the number 5 but you use the d-pad instead - so it isn't much of a problem. The puzzles are in groups of 100, so you can be stuck on 10 at the same time. It also lets you play local wireless matches and create custom puzzles for picross.
I'm looking for a good Sudoku game to replace Brain Age for my mom. How's the handwriting recognition on this? How similar is it to Brain Age's Sudoku mechanics? Would my non-gamer mom be able to play it?
It's really just "who can complete a sudoku puzzle first" with pictures instead of numbers; and whenever you complete a line or a square, you force your enemy to tap the screen a bunch of times before they can continue. It's nice to have portable Sudoku, but it's nothing like Puzzle Quest.

Essential Sudoku never recognizes my 5 in the Sudoku mode and is therefore unplayable. YMMV.
The Picross mode works fine though, so it's still worth it for that. I think your mom would like that a lot too.

in this number option, can you actually write the numbers in like in brain age?

The mods clearly have decided I derailed the thread - so I apologize for that.

It's only about £10 - and totally worth it.
