The LGBT Thread! Marriage is Equal, Now for Basically Everything Else
LGBT Pride Month is here! And so this is a thread for anyone and anything LGBT (and Q and U and A and I and whatever other letter is right for you)
See any cool LGBT news lately? Do you do anything fun or special during Pride Month? Are you somewhere in the QUILTBAG and want to talk about it? Do you know a cool LGBT related history fact? Are you doing something awesome for queer people in your life or community? Are you straight and have a question and promise to actually listen to the answer?
Then talk about that shit, I want to hear it all, just be fabulous to each other.
Things I am looking forward to this month: Going to way more Capital Pride stuff in DC, last year I just did the parade and it was great fun but I wished I had gone to way more events. So this year I'm gonna!
Also SCOTUS is gonna hand down a big ruling on same sex marriage this month, but the wait for that is kinda nerve wracking because there is always the chance Kennedy decides to be terrible.
Oh wait shit one other thing totally worth putting in here is that Ireland passed marriage equality by popular vote! That is totally fucking awesome!
Also the major opposition party in Australia, the Australian Labour Party, have just started to introduce a marriage equality bill in Australian Parliament

They've been using it as a campaigning point for at least the last election, so it's kinda interesting to see it being introduced when they are in the minority.
I mean it's a fucking disgrace that they had two terms in government, 50% of those with an atheist as PM, and they still didn't even try until it was too late.
But I don't really care about their motivations, as long as it gets through now.

Well if it passes they can take credit, but if it fails it will severely damage the Libs' chances at being reelected.
In all seriousness, I think a great thing to be proud of this month is how far Irish culture has come regarding LGBT rights. It might be hard to appreciate how anti-gay the population have been in even very recent history, so it's amazing that gay marriage passed with such popular support. It gives hope that other anti-gay cultures such as America and even extreme anti-gay cultures like Saudi Arabia will come around within our lifetimes.
I absolutely appreciate the significance of Pride being held in June. However, I'd like for it to not be upwards of 90 degrees for just one dang year during the festivities.

I said it in the other thread but I'll say it here too.
My church sent out a letter saying "We are going to be blessing same sex marriages. The bishop said it was up to us and this is what we decided."
Also the bishop personally blessed the same sex marriage of a friend of mine, back a few years ago, while things were still being 'discussed.' For Alabama, that's all a huge deal.

been holding my boyfriend's hand whenever we walk anywhere for 2 years now and we've never had anyone do anything nasty or say anything
that's progress that is
I've had a significant amount of shit from strangers, a large amount of whom are older women, for holding my GF's hand. It's weird. This is the first country to legalize gay marriage, and yet, also full of quite a few silly geese.

this is actually something I've seen happen, but hadn't yet considered being a possible thing I might have to deal with. I guess my brain just hasn't quite yet put 2 and 2 together for everything about this new development. I'm pretty contact focused in relationships, even in public, even if it's just holding hands. Actually a bit unnerving to think about the possibility of it being something that could happen
I don't even know how I'd response, and goodness knows my boyfriend is already super duper shy. I wouldn't want him to, like, freak out or anything. something to think about I guess
we were standing in line to pay for parking this weekend and I really noticed for the first time how much some straight couples can just be all over each other and not think a thing about it. whereas seeing lgbt couples even hold hands is still something I almost never see
The girlfriend and I hung out with her roommate and her girlfriend while she was in town. You see, her girlfriend is from Belgium and she's in Texas.
We went to dinner and after it was all over and we asked for the check, the waitress asked if we wanted to split it. I said yeah and gestured, very clearly, to the two girls and said, "They're together," and then to my girlfriend and me, "and we're together."
The waitress still looked really confused. She really shouldn't have, because the two girls had shared one plate between them and had explicitly said so during their order.
We ended up having to explain about three more times how to split the check while the girl from Belgium became increasingly irritated.
It was almost like it was more likely that I was the head of a polygamous group at the table than for two girls to be romantically involved and sharing the check.
In the end, they walked towards the door with their arms around each other while people stared openly at the couple, and we all waved back at them until they averted their gaze.
On a similar note, North Carolina tried to pass a law stating magistrates did not have to issue marriage certificates/perform marriages for gay couples if it violated their religion.
The conservative republican governor vetoed the hell out of it and said, "Sorry you swear an oath to support and defend the state constitution you don't get an opt-out clause. Do your job or quit."

Our governor is a certified idiot so I doubt he would have the same reaction.

shhh if y'all keep talking about being bisexual we won't be invisible anymore
Don't worry, we just have to walk around with a hetero partner and poof straight!
if I have one more person "helpfully" remind me that I need to make sure to leave room at LGBTQ events for "people who can't pass for straight, like you can" I'm just going to open my mouth and scream until the world ends
most recently was one of my bisexual friends responding to that post about how bisexual people in "straight relationships" need to not come to pride events because pride isn't for us, and she's like "well I mean there is a discussion to be had about making sure bisexual people with opposite gender partners don't take up too much space" and I'm like
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Bye, I'm high.

I am a fraud.
A few days ago I saw two girls holding hands, giggling together, and then kissing. It was really cute. I'm not used to seeing LGBT PDA around here.
I'm also from the first state to legalize same-sex marriage, which is kind of cool.
Which is in 9 days
my god it's in 9 days
