Man, Malachai's mom looks really strong. Her frame makes her look like she's made of cement. Fairly fitting for how cold and distant she seems to be from Malachai.
P.S. I hope that through this talent show arc, we get to see some sort of beautiful hidden talent emerge from Brian. Though vanity's not exactly his thing, so he might not be involved in this at all. We'll see though!
Does anyone else feel that all of Malachi's ego stems from his mother saying "That's sooooooo amazing boo boo, you're a snowflake, now leave me alone". All we hear is "Go away" but instead he heard "You're amazing and special".
The parent character looks more like a "mom" to me, too... probably the long hair.
Don't know if this is an intentional detail, but the vertical-ish line that indicates the opening in the placket of the shirt is on the right side of the buttons, suggesting this character is wearing a "man's" shirt. (Women's button-front shirts open on the left for reasons lost to antiquity and myth.) Of course, many women do wear men's shirts, so it doesn't necessarily mean anything.
I assumed it's his dad. While the shirt is feminine and the hair is long, it doesn't exactly match the brief glimpses we've had of Malachi's mom before. The only doubt I really had is if Malachi had said something about never meeting him.
I kind of lean towards mom at the moment (high five because I also looked up references to see which side it should be buttoned on).
@DAVIDHBROWN - I've been told that a woman's shirt buttons being on the opposite side is a remnant of the days when servants would help ladies to dress. I've not looked into it further, but I suppose it makes sense.
Just to be clear, it's definitely Malachi's mom. As Invisible mentioned, Malachi's never met his dad.
As for the shirt buttons being on the wrong side... This is something we didn't want to bring up just yet, but Malachi grew up in a special society where people wore shirts of varying button placement. It'll soon become a big part of the story.

Buttons on the wrong side of the shirt? What kind of FREAK society is that?!? Probably one that serves Mashed "Potato" instead of potatoes! I don't think I'm mentally ready
I've got to stop posting when I'm half asleep. It's embarrassing to read my halfway thought out sentences.
Truly Malachi is from a horrible society. Not only do they abandon their children in a camp with no supervision or adequate supplies, but they wear shirts with buttons on the wrong side! Monsters!
I'm positive there are a good many people who have signed up just to add comments and I join the ranks! I just binge read this entire comic in a day and might I say that was a terribly great use of my time! I'm upset I can't binge any more but at least now I'll have something to look forward to every week!

Of course, maybe the resident mean girls weren't the best people to introduce your talent to.

This is how supervillains are born......
and a closer look gave me: dish, arm, ... oh! knee
Also, those don't look like boobs to me. Just sayin'.
