I hope someone can help me here. I'm in the market for a new bicycle. I'll primarily be using it on streets and bike trails but I would also like to have the option to go out into the woods and hit those trails if I feel so inclined.
Now I have never bought a semi-nice bike before so I'm looking for advice on what I should look for etc. I know that when I get the bike I need to have it adjusted to me but aside from that I know nothing. I'd like to spend around $500 or so. Any thoughts or suggestions?

There was a thread like this very recently, but I'll say the same thing I said there.
Go to a good, local bike shop. They will know the area around you and be able to suggest a bike for the type of riding you want to do. Also, you will be able to try out any bike you are considering. Oh, and they can fit you properly for whatever bike you think you want. Yes, fit is this important, there are different sizes of bikes, and they can all be adjusted in many different ways.
For a specific brand, Specialized with Shimano hardware served me really well. I have had my Hardrock A1 (not even sure if they still make it) for five years, no repairs and little maintenance.
