[Camp Comic] Friday, June 19, 2015 - Presto Chango
well, unfortunately seeing malachai being increasingly a jerk does not endear me to this comic. Perhaps I am mistaken but the focus, severity, or even true existence of his jerkatude in the begining was minor to nil. It just seems to be getting worse and I hope it fades away and he can be more than this one note, like I seem to remember him being before. I'm losing interest since I have never liked main characters who are just terrible and he used to be cute or funny, but he's just a drag and has been for far too long now.
@BARONTERROR He's absolutely been a jerk since the beginning. The fact that you didn't notice is largely a combination of him just being in a new environment and also the fact this comic very probably didn't find its direction yet. But I really like this angle, because a) this is exactly how kids act - they're mean, selfish and mostly unable of any empathy until they see first hand what they caused, and Malachi embodies this perfectly, b) it's an interesting trait for a main character to have, it makes him pretty unique among all the other webcomics. Yeah, he's a jerk, but the comic is very much aware of it and earnest about it, and I really like Katie for exploring it. Besides, at the end of each story arch, we see some growth in him, often minor, but gradual.
I dunno, I think BaronTerror is right, Malachai's jerky-ness is pretty insufferable at times. The other campers are the ones that get me to read these comics every Tuesday/ Friday. Malachai's behavior will not keep me from reading, but yes I completely understand where BaronTerror is coming from.
I think it's interesting that the main character in this story is a jerk. He really does behave like a kid, though-- kids do tend to be insecure, lack empathy, and are generally selfish. The competitive ones, and especially ones with Malachi's background, have a strong need to be the best because they've been taught that's all that matters. In short, Malachi's character is true to his circumstances and upbringing.
But all is not lost. At the end of each arc, we see some growth and improvement in him. That's what makes tolerating his bad attitude worthwhile. Just like a normal kid, you know? In real life, you deal with the kid through the horrible teen years so that after all that growth, they finally turn into decent and thoughtful people.
Malachi is a lovable little jerk. He willingly went into a cabin that he thought was full of bears to rescue 17's stuffed animal. Yeah, he's full of himself, that's part of his story, his growth, but he's a good person. Flaws are what make the characters real.
his growth only lasts for a single comic strip though. That's part of where the frustration with his character lies. He'll do something nice, or show some humility, but only at the end of a story arc. Once a new one begins, it's like those previous lessons he learned never happened at all.
See Malachi, everything worked out. Now you'll be so busy managing & directing the talent show you that won't have time to embarrass yourself by participating in the show. After all, your real talent is your outgoing nature (and your huge ego, always a plus for any director).
I disagree. Malachi has grown from his experiences. Yes, he's still smug, but he's also become a friend to Seventeen and Brian. He's actually become a lot more selfless in his actions. No one makes a complete 360, not right away, we're barely out of Chapter 1, the journey is gradual and Malachi's belief in his own greatness is intrinsic to his character. We've seen some of his backstory and like all of the campers, what brought him to the camp has shaped him.
TBH I like smug Malachi. You feel for him in the context of how his mom treated him and you know he thinks if he was the best she'd want him back.

Point is he's been an asshole from the beginning, not recently.

Malachi, just enter the competition as "largest ego" . The arc is great, so far
