[MechWarrior Online] Marauder announcement lands critical hit on wallets.
The way I view it is the same way I view my Battlefield 4 "Skill" rating: I don't give two flying figs what my tier rating is...so long as I maintain a greater than or equal 1.0 k/d and as close to a 50/50 w/l ratio as possible. If I'm slumming it in the scrublord-tier but maintaining my personal performance metrics, I'll live.
Due to the double XP weekends the score rating got buggered up anyway. If you played a class easy to get points with like Assault their already ludicrous SPM would just go through the roof. I'm pretty proud of my Recon stats in BF3 though. Especially my just shy of 50% accuracy with the M98. That shit ain't easy being a CQC Recon.
I demand a lot out of myself so my personal bottom floor metrics are skewed towards that. I don't accept poor performance out of myself and always strive to do more than my best. For me, fun is getting good, getting even better, winning. The downside is that as a result I tend to get frustrated with team games. At least with the new tiering system I have more motivation to play so that I can jump tiers and get better matches. My tiering score is all fucked just because I barely ever play so I haven't racked up enough points to go up in tiers. Theoretically, though, this means I should have lots of easy targets.
In related news, I did the tutorial and scored five million C-Bills out of that. I'm not flat broke again! I do kinda wish the tutorial emphasized hammering the R button more though.

It'd be great to see them introduce challenges vs. AI to condition players to play better. Like, mechs equipped exclusively with Streak SRMs and LRMs to force them to R all day erry day :P
When I played BF4, the only stat I cared about was tanks killed. The other stats didn't matter. I was an engineer and my motto is that if I didn't personally kill the tanks then nobody would. For the first month of so while I was heavily playing the game, it was neat to see that I had killed more tanks than anyone else in my city (or the neighboring cities). For the record, I considered the starting rocket launcher to be trash. Easy to use trash that was good at pissing off tanks and was hilariously the one that tankers begged to be nerfed on the forums, but the RPG and SMAW were the ones that actually turned tanks into coffins.
I usually take the same approach in other games. My most satisfying kills were in Red Orchestra 2 with the anti-tank rifle (which was most decidedly NOT designed to pierce the armor of the Panzer IV or T-34). It was fun finding the chinks in their armor. A bullet here punches through and kills the driver, a bullet there damages hydraulics. Knock out the brakes and it becomes a huge pain to drive the tank. If you're a crack shot and are a bit lucky, you could jam the turret ring. And of-course it was always fun putting a round between the second and third drive wheel of the T-34 and watching their high explosive magazine brew up.
It didn't matter how many times I got killed by the supporting infantry as I positioned myself for the shots. What mattered was that the tank was crippled or dead.
the long-run danger of the visible PSR is that it incentivizes the wrong stuff and people wind up being more likely to farm damage; the upside is that you actually get kind of a long-run measure of how/if you're improving
it's not like it changed anything from the standpoint of gameplay; it can be safely ignored if you want
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet

My last positive experience with Battlefield was in 3 with the Assault class - I'd run around in Team Deathmatch with an underbarrel smoke grenade launcher, covering downed allies with it and reviving them before ghosting away under the smoke to rinse and repeat.
I'd normally end up at the top of the scoreboard of a winning team despite having a K/D of about 25/40
Oh, and every now and then I'd cause mayhem against entire squads by taking out one with the smoke grenade and spraying the rest of my rifle into the smoke
I've been experimenting with NARCs. On the one hand you actually get a lot of points for NARC assists. On the other hand the weapon is useless if your team doesn't have LRMS (because LRMS are lackluster) and if the the enemy has ECM (although I can't really complain about that one. NARCs are actually supposed to be countered by ECM). But if they don't have ECM and you do have a few LRM mechs, then it can be nice.
Lighter mechs can't really afford to carry both NARCs and their own LRMs.
It worked out ok on my Timberwolf since I could NARC a target and then hide for my own LRM barrage, but there are better ways I could configure a Timberwolf.
I'm trying them out on my Shadowcat now. I'm basically running it like the laser sniper Raven-3L, but with NARCs, MASC (which I've found lackluster), JJ, and clan tech in general.
NARC can be the single most hilarious thing in the game. Especially if their ECM mechs split up. If they do that I generally spend the entire game hunting down and NARCing the ECM mechs one by one.
I've been having no luck with them tonight. The main reason I'm giving it a shot is because is got 5 narc assists the other day when I experimenting farming damage with LRMs on my timberwolf, and the NARC assists totaled up to 30,000 points (that's more than the win bonus).
It is a little disheartening when you land a NARC on that direwolf standing out in the open, and nobody on your team gives a fuck because LRMs are so weak 99% of the time that nobody brought any.
My team sort of got themselves cut down on Tourmaline Desert.
On the plus side, that match did let me finish basicing one more of my EBJ variants. Two down, one to go. THhn I can focus on upgrading my EBJ-Prime to max to unlock that module slot.
As an aside. Why is the ghost bear camo so much better than the others? It is like my EBJ is made out of Marble.

That was the first time I got a decent match in my 3x LRM 15, 2x LL, 1x NARC Mauler and it felt good. I don't think I saw either you or Kaboodles until right before you guys died, though I did sling some LRMs your way early on. Not sure if they hit or not. Heh.
Some certainly did. I tried joining some guys that were trying to push into you after it became apparent that your force was better at the stand back and poke game, but it was too late by then.
edit:
I really wish NARCS at least gave you some points when you landed them. It would be nice to get some credit even if you don't have LRMs. They're not purely a LRM tool. They can shut down an ECM mech and can keep a dorito on a target without somebody needing to maintain LOS at all times.
It seems like they're 100% deadweight if your team has no LRMs (like my past six rounds).
Well I've bought my Marauders....well, I've tried to buy them all. The system is rejecting my credit card when I try to buy the Bounty Hunter. Probably because it is suspicious as fuck for two back-to-back transactions to the same party like that. I sure hope my card isn't locked right now due to the "suspicious activity" of trying to utilize PGI's terribly laid out form. That would be awkward when paying for lunch tomorrow, but that's why I always carry cash.
In hindsight I should have just waited awhile before grabbing the bounty hunter. Maybe someday PGI will learn to fix their web forms. There are these wonderful things called checkboxes and radio buttons that have been around for awhile.
The Marauder is my weakness. However I recognize that it may very well be a foolish decision. They have consistently failed to give the IS new competitive mechs for at least a year. Just a long string of duds and lukewarm mechs while the clans keep getting new staple rides.
They better not burn my baby like they burned the black knight. They are on thin ice. The MAD-3R had better have some quality AC5 quirks on it. Preferably generic energy quirks or medium laser quirks instead of PPC quirks (it will undoubtedly have some PPC quirks, which will be ignored unless they go full on god-tier Thunderbolt-has-nothing-on-this PPC quirks because PPCs are terrible weapons).
I hope the MAD-3R(S) ends up being one of my staple rides and one of my go-to mechs for farming cbills. The high mounted triple ballistic hardpoint has inherent potential. The energy weapons are better suited for close in defense. I think the frame has enough potential in its own right, it just needs PGI to not completely half-ass it on the quirk front.
If they shortchange the MAD, I will in all likelihood never purchase another IS mech from them. Probably never another clan mech either. I have my madcats and shadowcats. I have my ravens and stalkers. There is nothing more they can offer me to change my mind if they cross me on my precious Marauder. Not even the MAD-IIC. (I never liked IIC mechs).

I worked around this by buying the base Marauder package and picking up a $25 Karma Koin card when I hit up the grocery store.
...that being said, there wouldn't even be a need for a work around if PGI knew that buying multiples of things on online sites is actually a thing.
Also, just had my best match I've ever had in my Stormcrow. I swapped out the ER large lasers for large pulses, but kept the ER mediums. Second match with that loadout was on Terra Therma, and I thought I was going to be thoroughly screwed (I'm still basicing them). And, sure enough, all seemed pretty lost as my team didn't get to the caldera and were mostly just milling about on one ramp. Thankfully, I saw two heavy mechs waddle over to hit up a side-ramp (a Black Knight and a Jester), so I followed them up. I took a few pot-shots with the heavies, but the enemy team was starting to notice our little distraction, so I decided to leg it on over to the next ramp over. To shorten the story a bit:
I crest into the caldera, see four mechs with their backs to me and line up alpha strikes on all those juicy rear-CTs while avoiding revealing my position. When all was said and done, I netted four kills and one assist (the assist was the one mech that noticed me: an Arctic Cheetah...and my lasers weren't doing any damage to it).

Art team killing it as always. BK gives me a Gypsy Danger vibe, although I did just watch Pacific Rim so its fresh.
THANK YOU!!! It has been killing me trying to place where I have seen the BK before! It totally did not look like a Gundam at all, sorry Nips.
@ResIpsaLoquitur I honestly think that would be a good idea for having some mechs today (the AC) and then the rewards in October, and a full pack in December with extra goodies. At this point I would do the same if I was in your boat. The only and thing is that you will miss the C variation for the lasers in one arm till they release them for cbills. Or if you can wait not having lots of mechs today, going for the Origins II packs up through the hunchback like @OpposingFarce suggested would also be a good investment since we all know the Clan Jenners and Hunchbacks will be scary based on their IS counterparts.
Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll end up with the cheetahs for something now (I'm getting married on Jan 1, so my December will be busy enough as it is). Plus, I think my favorite variants of the IIC Jenner and Hunchie are the early adopter versions, which has me a little disappointed.

11:21 PaulInouye: roughly it will take about 2500+ games to climb to tier 2 for example.. if you have a decent w/l
11:22 PaulInouye: if you magically win every game you play with high match score... you might get there in 1000 games.
I've been losing a lot lately. It's only a matter of time till I slip down in to tier 3.

I made a 4x PPC, 2x SRM6A Mauler kinda as a joke but... It's actually pretty good. I guess the AWS can do it better but I'm genuinely surprised and how well it works.
The "Dragon" is an overpowered mech that pilots itself, but performing the same feats in an ebon jaguar is a mark of true skill.
Wow. The kool-aid is strong with that one.
Does the dragon even have anything notable these days? They have the one variant with the quirked ac5s, but that folds if the enemy attacks your arm or cores the dragon's exposed center torso.
See, stunlocking people so they cant move, see or react with cheese weapons? That's all skill.
Dragon actually protecting its arm long enough to do damage? That's just PGI slobbing all over IS's knob and should be nerfed. It should be more than nerfed, the dragon should have that arm completely removed not just dequirked, but removed!

Paul is really something. I have no idea why your rating should be primarily tied to wins and losses controlled almost entirely by 23 other people instead of say: score, weapon accuracy or K/D. Stats that I can go look at, right now, on their webpage.
I'm sure he's a long-time co-worker/business partner with Russ and Brian, and wants to work on games soooooooo bad. But unless the guy is willing to actually improve himself (play on the live servers maybe?), he's just a bad choice to be working on this stuff.

You shouldn't think that way. You can still influence the match enough in a 12v12 to win most of your games. Seriously, watch Heimdelight play; he solo queues a ton and hardly ever loses.

With a statistically significant sample size and an unbiased population, win/loss would be the correct determinant. It's what you're trying to encourage, and 24 people notwithstanding, with enough repetition the true value shakes out. Matchmaking means the data set is extremely biased, but it's not hard to see how using weapon accuracy or K/D could shape players' unit selection and how they play.
