Windows freezes while installing BF2 patches

Today, I installed BF2 on my external HD without a hitch. However, it's v1.0, so I need to update it to play it. I tried first to install the 1.4 full patch, but the system completely locks up at about 9% (when I say completely, I mean no mouse, no keyboard, nothing). I figured it was due to a large amount of data being sent over the Firewire connection (even though installation of the original game went fine). So, I downloaded the 1.22 patch, then the 1.22-1.3 incremental patch, and the 1.3-1.4 incremental patch. Problem is, the 1.22 patch is also locking up at about 9%. I think it's the same file, for what it's worth. How in the hell am I supposed to update BF2?

Possibly a corrupted file? How much RAM do you have? Try downloading a fresh patch from a different site.

I have 1 GB of RAM, and all the patches do the same thing, unfortunately.

Are you downloading them from the same source? If so, try a different site to download them from. Gamershell.com is a favorite of mine.

All I can say then is try installing from your main internal drive or just let it sit for several minutes. See what happens.

Yeah, give it time before giving up. Additionally, you can try installing them in Safe mode - might work.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

I tried waiting once, and about 10 minutes after it froze it gave me an error saying it could no longer write files to the drive.

Safe mode might not be a bad idea, however.
