I'm not aware of anyone stealing a tank during the cold war (I know of at least one stolen post war) although a lot of other, smaller stuff went missing. Know how in 80's action films the hero seems to have a ton of weapons he shouldn't have? It wasn't that unknown. I know 5 M-60 machine guns ended up in IRA hands.
