Sunglasses with a high index

DarkewolfeDarkewolfe Registered User regular
My current lenses are 1.74. My optometrist said he thinks I can go down to 1.67 if need be.

I have considered transition lenses, but what I would really like is something akin to wraparounds that would really cover my eyes. The shop tech at my optometrist didn't think anything like that was feasible because of distortion. He suggested a few metal frames with larger lenses so that he could bend the frames after the lenses "straightened them."

I usually don't buy my glasses from my optometrist because they're expensive and don't have a great selection, and I know they wouldn't be inclined to suggest an option they didn't carry. Does anyone with a high prescription have a good sunglasses solution? Some of the websites that sell cheap frames say they have suitable frames for high prescriptions, but I'm dubious.

What is this I don't even.

Transition lenses are garbage. Don't get them.

They take a minute to transition back to "normal glasses" mode after darkening up, so you're the asshole who looks like they're wearing sunglasses indoors. The darkened glass still isn't as good as having actual sunglasses either, so they're not even that great at functioning outdoors.

I can't help you find good glasses, but if I can stop someone from making the mistake that I made, I will. :)

My wife is also not a fan of transition lenses because they don't transition in the car, which can be a pain in the butt and eyes.

I'm in the same boat with a desire to have decent sunglasses. After going over options with my optometrist it seems like the only real option is get fitted for contact lenses. You may have a better solution pop up but I couldn't find one.

According to the eyeglass place I go to, they actually have transition ones that work in the car now (gray only though).

My wife has pretty crap vision; her solution is to use contacts and cheap non-prescription sunglasses.

    I can't get contacts, unfortunately.

    (i am an optician)

depending on your RX you can get "sports cerved lenses" not cheep. but it is possable to 1.67 tinted onto a wrap frame. and IMO there is not much diffrence in thickness with 1.67 and 1.74 lenses if you choose the correct lens design

next option is there are wrap frames with are made to incorporate high rx lenses. the are not as wrap as they look. so alot of people go for theese

another is. there are frames like cycleing sunglesses and the ones swat etc use that have a RX insert behind the lens of your choice.

if your optom is saying you can only have 1.74 lenses that is not the case.

    what is you RX?

I have a fairly high perscription (-5.25/-4.75), and I got rx sunglasses by ordering a regular glasses frame with a larger lens than I would use for regular glasses in a sunglasses lens. Wrap around was not really a good economical option. I used Clearly Contacts, I believe their US arm is called Coastal Contacts.

Pay attention to lens dimensions. Basically I got a taller and wider lens than I would normally choose. They have been awesome for driving and walking around in the sun. I highly recommend spending a little extra for getting polarized lenses too.

Cost me $200 but I think that is pretty decent.

one thing to bear in mind with polarized is if you plan on useing things with lcd screens when useing them the screen will be blocked out a certain angles. can be annoying with some phones, camaras and car dash

they are really good for seeing threw the serfaice of water so if you fish etc.

I have transition lenses and I have never had any problems with them. Yeah if it is super bright outside and you walk indoors it can take a moment for them to adjust but that is a minor inconvenience. I have also never found them to be insufficiently dark.

While racing light mechs, your Urbanmech comes in second place, but only because it ran out of ammo.

Transition lenses won't help for the same reason that I'm asking for help on sunglasses in general. My prescription is high enough that I have to get smaller lenses, which means they don't cover my entire field of view. I've had sunglasses of this size, and they're not that great because I still get tons of sun coming in around the edges. I would really like to figure out how close I can get to wrap-arounds, where your eyes are fully covered/protected from the sun.

Have you looked into Liberty Sport frames? They have some frames with little magnetic...bumpers? that help to make the glasses flush with the face.

Looking at it, I think this is precisely the sort of suggestion/brand I was looking for. I will investigate further, thanks!

Would side shields work? Some models of sunglasses have them built onto the wings.

They also had a pair with the bumpers and were on a strap, like goggles, but my wife wouldn't let me get them :(

Yeah, I'm looking for something to wear driving, playing golf, fishing, etc. I accept that it might not be super cool looking, though if I can figure out something cool in a geek chic way, that'd be good.

Well I wanted the goggles for driving an uncovered belt loader across an airport ramp in heavy snow, so I was looking for something a little heavier duty. But the Liberty Sports I tried were pretty comfy with the bumpers.

I've had lenses cut for two Oakley frames (bought off ebay) at my local optician. It gets kind of pricey, but they're really quite nice, with a wide variety of tints (I like the VR28 for driving). The max RX depends on the wrap, but my prescription is similar to yours.
